I’ll be installing three mahogany porches here using 5/4X4 T&G.
I’m painting all four sides first with Cabots Austrailian Oil. Says its made for Mahogany and a few other woods.
My question is..What type nail do you use? I’d like to use my Porta Nail gun.
I called Porta Nail and they sell Stainless Steel 2″ nails for $83 a thousand which covers approx. 200 sq ft. I’d need three boxes at least.
Will SS nails go through mahogany without bending?
Or do I need to pre drill every freakin’ hole like IPE and use a galvie finish?
Thanks

Use bubinga pegs instead of nails.
Hey Andy,
When I put my mahogany deck on my house I had to predrill all of the nail holes. 2200 lineal feet of decking material. IIRC it was around 4,000 nails/nail holes. This wasn't T&G though just 5/4x6. I used 2 1/2" SS ring shank and 9 years later they are still holding well.
Good call on aplying the finish to all 4 sides. Not knowing any better, and not having Breaktime around at that time, I only did top and sides. Because of how badly the boards cupped I had to rent a floor sander last summer and sand down the deck and restain. The fun part of that was setting all of the 4000 nail heads prior to sanding...
You might also want to take a look at the penofin product line. They now have an oil based finish that is for Mahogany specifically. I used it last year and so far I am real happy with the results.

Little off topic here, but what the h*ll,I built a mahogony deck around our pool (yeah, I know "bad choice, Recko, bad choice") but the deed is done.I treated it with a product called X100 (both a pre-finish and a finish, which was their natural color). THe deck has turned somewhat black (might be mildew, but it seems too prevalent) and I wanted to preserve the reddish color.I power washed it the other weekend and am waiting for a few days of sunny weather to re-apply a finish. What can anyone recommend that'll keep it's reddish color?? (I'll check out the Pennofin stuff), but any other recommendations?(I'll also look into the Cabot's Austrailian stuff too).

Yeh,,,thanks Mark. I was praying I didn't have to drill every hole but I'm guessing if I'm going through the tongue thats already 1/4 down into the plank already and slamming each nail in in the Porta Nailer with the mallet it "will" drive em' home even if they are soft stainless (he says with fingers crossed).
And far as Penofin ... I was going to use that but none was available as readily as I needed it and found the Aussie Oil. I like trying new things so I tried it so far on all the treads...Leaves a nice finish but I'm guessing won't last more than two years which is pushing it I think.
I figure its no biggie to ROS it once every year or two and coat it again. I doubt any thing works more than a cpl a years anyway. If Blodgett says, Tipi tipi tipi it must be so!

I pre-drilled and used galvanized common nails, what a waste of time that was. If I'd known there were stainless flooring cleats available I'd have gone with them. Don't even think of using finish nails, meranti moves a lot, so much so that I wound up adding a 5/4 x 8 apron around the outside later. The gaps between boards got so large that I coulda used it to store sawblades.
Get the Porta nails they will work. Mahog ain't THAT hard.
