I am a homeowner with two exposed doug fir beams that jut out of the house a couple feet.
The beams are a major pain in the ass, and I have to paint and fix dry rot about every 2-3 years. Is there an easier way?
Should I:
Make a galvinized cap for them?
Get a better paint?
Use bondo then paint?
Or just cut the damn things off?
Thanks in advance.

Decorative or Structural? Kind of the Adobe look or do they have a function exterior of the house?
How much "fixing" of the rot, and how?
More please.

It is a Structural Beam, although it is quite oversized. One of the beams is at the ridge, and is 16 x 8, and the other is of similar size but is on the front of the home. They go full length into the home.
The home was built in the 70's. There is a signficant amount of rot, to the extent that we must rout, saw, and carve sections out of it. Probably not enough to warrant replacing the end.
I saw evidence of prior patches as well, so this has happened before.
I would like to repair it right, if that is possible.
Thanks for your help.
