Question:
I’m building a “farm house” style home and I’m at that piont of trimming the exterior side of the windows & doors. I would really like to use a
maintenance free material and at a reasonable cost. I’ll be using ceder clapboard siding and the issue of expansion and contraction with materials other then wood concerns me.
Any suggestions???

Another product is the cement/wood fiber boards like "Hardi-plank". It is used for commercial and residential- usually horizontally like clap board at several widths but I don't see why it could not be used like any board.(eg board and batten) It is fairly competitively priced and very stable. It paints well too.

Hardiplank would probably sag if used as soffit material...but as facia board, maybe...
