As a contractor in a litigious state I have always been stickler for hiring only licensed contractors who provide me with proof of insurance. Except once…. I hired someone for cash and they may have caused as much as $15,000 or more in damages. Has anyone filed a claim against their liability insurance before? What am I in for? I’m guessing they’ll probably cancel my policy afterwards. What else?

I'll be interested to hear what others think, but my first reaction is that you knowingly violated the terms of your policy and will get no $ at all.

what did the ???sub??? do ?
$15K is a lot of moolah
Its really a hypothetical situation for discussion sake. I'm curious what people's experiences have been in dealing with insurance, since I've payed all this money over the years and never made a claim.
Well heck since we are dreaming here.... They will pay it in full and reduce your premiums because you are a nice guy.
i cut down the wrong tree one time...
before my insurance company would cover me and defend me, they first had to make a determination that my action wasn't "willfull"Mike Hussein Smith Rhode Island : Design / Build / Repair / Restore
the worst one was when i was named in a 3d party suit about a trip & fall in a new home we had built
my insurance company had gone belly-up and my new one wouldn't cover the occurrence
i was finally let out of the suit, but i still had a legal bill to pay... later i was reimbursed by my insurance agent.... thru their errors & ommissions insuranceMike Hussein Smith Rhode Island : Design / Build / Repair / Restore
I would guess your agent then dropped you as a client. That happened to me in a situation like that a few years ago
yes, he did..... best thing ...

I would be very leery about making that claim. You might end up with no insurance an no ability to buy a policy. That 15k might be better off coming out of your pocket directly. Either way, you will pay but the hard way may be far worse.
