Makita 14.4 impact driver gets hot
I’ve noticed lately that my impact driver gets hot. Not so hot that I can’t keep my hand around the motor housing or anything but hot enough to raise a eyebrow.
Now, I will say that this was during heavy use screwing underlayment, hardiebacker, and some 3 inch deck screws repeatedly. First thought was that this was normal given the workload.
Is it normal?
It’s the old 14.4 nimh 2.6 amp hour model (that came with a free drill/driver). It’s only about 2 years old and was never heavily used until recently.
Odd thing is the motor area gets hot but the batts don’t. With my r/c cars, if the run them hard, the motor and batts get hot. Not sure if the same principle applies.

MIne does the same thing with extended heavy use. I have the same version as you.

I have the same model. Under heavy use, (driving tim-locks) it does get warm. I look at it as an added bonus- it keeps your hands warm on cold mornings. I have beat the hell out mine. Hard use, several drops from roofs, one drop through 85 feet of scaffolding at sounding like a pin ball machine on the way down and it still works great after 2 and 1/2 years. Defineatly one tool I would buy again.
Luv that set but why cant the nitwits put the lite and belt clip on the drill?
A-men to that. I have the same set too..I keep trying to hang the drill and when I let go , well, it falls! LOLSpheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks
"Welcome to Poo-ville, can I have your socks?Seriously Folks, I need a home for 3 lovers of your life.
Thanks all. I figured since it was only warm to the touch, it was OK. What was strange was that the batts stayed cool. I do love the impact driver. The impact driver works so well that I thought the drill had something wrong with it because it didn't have the same rpm's. That thought was quickly eradicated after I used the drill for the first time.
What I love the most is having the convenience of using both at the same time and not having to switch back and forth between drill and driver bits. I thought the light was going to be just a gimmick (since no other set had a light at the time) but it also has been fantastic. I use more than any other flashlight. I like that it illuminates an whole area vs a spot light.
I have the Makita 10" sliding miter saw and the quality of that was a big reason for me choosing the Makita for the driver.
Funny you posted this, I noticed that mine was getting pretty hot today while driving home some LedgerLocks. I'm pretty sure though that it's done that since day one with "heavier" impact work. Come to think of it, my LXT 18v impact does the same. That said, 5" LedgerLocks into red oak are about as much of a workout as I'll give a cordless impact driver since buying a corded impact wrench last year. I try not beat on them as much anymore. That said, I've put Simpson Titans into cured concrete before with a fresh battery - didn't miss a beat. Impressive power from such a small package... heard that somewhere...
