The Makita 9564CV angle grinder instructon manual warns us to use only the special (optional) wheel guard when using an abrasive cut-off wheel. I contacted Makita’s customer service department for the part number of the special wheel guard and was told no such guard is available. Has anyone reading this been able to locate such a wheel guard? Fred in Lakewood, CO

I located the part number off the instruction manual pdf from Makita--- http://www.makita.com/en-us/Assets/Output/DownloadFile.aspx?FileName=Products/9564CV/owners_manuals/9564CV.pdf
The part number is 192476-6
Oddly, the grinder looks a whole lot like mine from Bosch. I have used this grinder for a whole long time and it's original wheel cover-like the orig makita-is the only guard I've used. The full cup for a cut off wheel might be a safety feature in case the wheel breaks. I have not found that to happen and have been pretty abusive with this tool.
The wheel guard changes easily-I'd have no problem using one if it was in the box.
I am surprised you could not get info from Makita.
Wheel Guard
Thanks for your helpful reply. I'm going to take my grinder to the Denver Makita repair center and see if they have the wheel guard for abrasive cut-off wheels. Your reply suggests that using a cut-off wheel with the open guard is possible; I may put a face shield over my safety glasses and give that a try.
Well,
the pisser is that anything that's inherantly dangerous is still dangerous-whatever you can do to make it safer is a help.
I've always wondered about which brain trust decided to produce such smart objects as the trigger lock on a sawzall and even the positive slide (sort of ) switch on these angle grinders.
Best of luck.
Your post was so "right on."
We had that same Makita angle grinder at work for years. We cut a ton of stuff with and even broke a few cut-off blades in the process. The only PPE that I should have worn more was hearing protection and a dust mask, but everything else was a no brainer. Jeeze, let's see, this thing spins reall, really fast and throw out a bunch of stuff that could hurt me or make me blind,....maybe I should wear gloves, long sleeves, safety glasses, and a face shield. Ah, Bubba, maybe you better put the same stuff on, since you are in the danger zone holding the shop vac nozzle next to the grinder to suck up the dust.
I have a new Makita, with the paddle switch, at home. It didn't come with the cut off wheel guard either.
What the heck was Makita thinking. Don't they know I could get hurt without that guard, and..... it would be thier fault?

How's that paddle switch on this tool? Seemed the couple I've used I had my throat in my heart because when in a testy situation I could only think I might drop the tool...................rather than the usual reaction-hold on tight.
