These all have tabs so don’t need to build a spot welder.
So, which is the best choice for old Makita? Will my old chargers work with NIMH batts? Think the old Makitas are NIcads, newest one I have bought in 07, but most are much older.

All the NIMH Makita 9.6 sticks I have seen were gray. All the Nicads I have seen were black. The drill kits that came with 9.6 NIMHs had a different charger which was IIRC compatible with multiple voltage battery types. I seem to remember reading that the NIMHs should not be charged in the older style chargers and indeed I never tried to do so. I'll look for the owner's manual if noone else offers any more definitive information.
Have both chargers now thanks to JulianTracy, but still a bunch of dead old Nicads.

I'm in a similar situation and am currently considering whether to buy more nicads (I'm down to 2+/-) or move on to a bunch of newer of drills. I am intrigued by your rebuilding concept which was an option that I had overlooked.
move on to a bunch of newer of drills
Drills are drills, if the 9.6 won't do it I my hoard of a dozen corded from 1/4 to 3/4" will do it.
All the kits come with a drill, what the hell do I need with another drill?
Buying one tool cost as much as kit, and can't buy a kit with only what I would want so might as well keep on keepin' on?

All my old 9.6 drills are in a pile under a bench. <G>
The pack of 24 NiCds look like a decent deal, having tabs is a big plus.
Spent this week in ABQ, so did not see your e-mail till now.
I'm thinking it's about a toss as to those or the HF batt pack. No reason to pop for the NIMH, I'll have enough of these to keep charged. And I'm cheap.
How was ABQ? Just in time for a blizzard, got a little snow here too.
Thanks, Joe H
Just in time for a blizzard
Pretty light, what they call 'corn snow' there, kinda like small hail but light, about the size and weight of crushed up styrofaom cup pellets.
Local TV news had it sounding like 100 Storm.
Guess not? Predicted 50MPH winds for here, coulda flown a kite maybe.

The tabs are attached to one battry, but don't you still have to make the connection to the other?
There are a couple of places on eBay that sell new aftermarket 9.6v battery packs at prices that aren't too bad if you factor your time fixing yours.

I'm retired, time is not scarce here.
Other than take out the trash once a week, my schedule is open:)

Well then, have fun :)
