Makita LXT 18V losing 2nd and 3rd gear
Second and third gear started grinding yesterday in my 2-yr-old Makita 18V LXT drill driver. A quick search of the archives here shows a couple of others have had this problem. Anyone have it fixed out-of-warranty? Any notion of what it might cost? Anyone take one of these apart themselves? I used to fix my panasonic by myself.

Your still in warranty! Three years on the tool and one on the batts! And it happens when using the high speeds for heavy stuff, so the repair guy told me.
I have a small drill that has two speeds. When I put to much torque on it in high gear it slips out.
To me that is an indicator that using high gear for heavy loads is a no no.

I'll have to check mine. I thought it was not coming out of hammer setting fully. When i switch from drill to screw it doesn't make any noise, but i will check it through the gears.
This is not a hammer drill, just the BDF451 three-speed drill driver. Pecking around online I read that they've replaced it with the 454, and the transmission was indeed a problem.I've seen conflicting info on the warranty. My manual says 1 year, web site says 3 years. Maybe I'm misreading the manual. Would be nice if it was still under warranty.Steve
Contact a main rep. and see see what he says.
Years back I had a 12volt Bosch drill driver with a tranny that farted out after I'd had it a while.
Called and they told me to send it in. I did thinking they would repair it but they sent me back the latest new model driver instead.
Needless to say my present three cordless drill are all Bosch. Manufacturers have to carry good service reputations or they'll go belly up.
