Hi All,
Thought I would post some pictures of the mantel I’m building – especially since it’s rare for me to remember (or have enough energy at the end of the work day) to take photos as I work.
These pictures were taken after a total of 11 hours work. The piece isn’t finished yet, though – still missing a couple pieces of molding that go on top of the built-up crown that you see in the picture. Also, it’s obviously missing the flat shelf that goes on top, and of course, paint…but you can get the idea.
I resized the pics, but if they are still too big just say the word (or perhaps somebody will beat me to it and resize them)

Very nice. For yourself or a client?
How the heck is the garbage can corral going? I asked you at Tipifest and you didn't sound positive. I need to get going on mine and need to steal your ideas.

The mantel is for a client.
ah, the garbage can corral. Well, if you remember, that was a two-part project that included the shower and corral. The shower is up (sans the floor and surrounding patio), but the corral has not yet been erected. I believe it sits, assembled into respective wall components, in the basement awaiting a fresh burst of motivation.Justin Fink - FHB Editorial

very nice...sorry if this a silly question but will it be painted or stained....what kind of wood are you using....I was wondering about the 2 toned streaks. if that gets covered or not.
Alrighty, I was assuming it would be painted. Went back and re-read Justin's post, and, yup:

yup...that's what happens when you read to fast when it's late...I see now
Justin - looks good - DW and I were really perusing your miters to see how tightly they fit - seems okay ;-)
Actually, I had called her over to show her your super sano tool rack on the back wall - she looked, and pointed out that "yeah, but there's sawdust on his floor"
Forrest
yeah, but the sawdust on the floor is poplar sawdust - from routing those flutings! ...I knew I should have swept up before taking the photos
Actually that photo was taken in the Fine Woodworking shop here at our office. You're looking at the bench room, and the handy organization is the work of FWW shop manager John White. He's great at figuring out stuff like that.
glad you like the miters :)Justin Fink - FHB Editorial

You should have seen Dino's EZ flute demonstration.
I'm impressed. I didn't know you editors actually knew how to *DO* anything.

Justin, very nice work. Is that your workshop? In a separate building? Garage? Basement? How much time did you invest in setting up your shop?
I'm also wondering how you work full-time in publishing and keep your carpentry business going.
When I worked in publishing, it took 12-hour days to get a product on the street every day; maybe with a monthly magazine it's only like that for that last week before it "ships"?
Lookin' forward to chatting with you at the Bikefest.
Allen
I manage to keep the business going on the side for a few reasons:
- I'm young
- I'm single
- I need the extra money
- and I don't take on large projects, just lots of small ones to keep the extra cash flowing.
My job at FHB is absolutely still my top priority. I love it here, and I would never let that side work interfere with my duties for the magazine. Justin Fink - FHB Editorial
