Mantle design ideas

tcalisto | Posted in General Discussion on October 17, 2005 07:33am

I am hoping to get some ideas for a mantle design. I have a gas insert fireplace with a brick surround (a row of bricks on edge) and hearth. I am looking to incorporate a bow front and columns into the design but am having a hard time putting my ideas onto paper. Does anyone have any mantles that you have built and would like to share or could you please point me to a good resource for design ideas (ie books or web sites).

Thanks,

Tom

    Probably not what you're looking for, but here's one I did.

    Try http://www.mantelsdirect.com for design ideas - or to buy a kit.

      Womble,

      I believe that I should be able to pull some ideas from what Mantelsdirect has to offer. I dont know why I did not catch them earlier when I did a search for mantels.

      Also Thank you jkidd for the FHB reference I will check that one out.

      Thanks,

      Tom

    About a year and a half ago FHB ran an article with mantles built by Gary Katz and Gary Striegler. Both were very nice. Mario Rodriguez has a book about building mantles that's very good (I think it's a Taunton publication). I've made a couple of mantles from Mario's books and am happy with them. Sorry that I don't have any photos since the mantles are in other people's houses.

          Yes there is. There is entirely too little sarcasm in the world today and I'm doing my part to rectify that. Sorry if you got offended. I had about 10 people jump on me the last time I posted a 100 gigabite picture. I won't do it again. Consider this strike one. Ooops - almost forgot   =+}

          Oh, by the way, nice looking mantle.Birth, school, work, death.....................

    I've got a whole boat load of ones that I did but you could Google "fireplace" and you'll get more then you can imagine.

    Geez we're on a Taunton site and nobody's mentioned the Taunton book on mantles? Anyway. If you're just looking for inspiration, it's a decent primer. There is a bow front in there, a McIntosh copy which actually looks pretty snazzy. I did just build one of those in a house here a couple of months ago. Might give you food for thought.

      Thanks to all who responded. I did have a chance to swing by the local Woodcraft and take a look at the their 3 books on the subject (One being the Taunton Book).

      Thanks again,

      Tom
