JUst tore down a Bricked in flower bed that was toothed into the wall brick. They coated the brick with roofing tar to avoid water penetration. Instead of tearing down 16inches of brick with the tar on it I wanted to cover it wiht faux stone.
I know the stone wont adhere to the tar so I was going to rip a sheet of Durock to 16 inches and screw it to the tarred side. This is an inside corner on the exterior of the home but the brick 90 degrees to my right has no tar on it. Shold have taken a photo, sorry.
The brick is very rough and stable. Mortar is in good shape. Question 1: Do you see a problem with the durock covering the tarred left hand side and going right over the Durock..rough side out?(about 7 feet. ) On the right side can I adhere the faux stone directly to the brick, no Durock, no wire, ? The length of this wall is about 10 feet but I was going to stair-step down after about 6 feet. If I have to use wire ora scratch coat, I cannot stair-step down. The stone is so random I would never beable to calculate the stairstepping o fthe scratch coat.

You could do it that way, but IMO, would be easier to chip that tar off
