I have had a marble tiled floor installed in one bathroom over a mud floor. I have installed ceramic tile in my laundry room over cement board and was pleased with the ease of installation and durability (thus far). Am now ready to install marble 4×4 tiles in a second bathroom and am wondering whether the cement board is an adequate alternative to the mud base. Instalation is in a new bathroom with an two layers of 1/2 inch plywood subflooring. Any suggestions?

Hi Marc,
I'm not a tiler, just have some experience in remodel
projects, but it sounds like a winner to me, if your floor
system is adequate for that much weight, also figuring in
the added weight of toilet, tub, people, water, etc. in
addition to the cement board plus the 4x4 marble.
Other guys may have a different idea, but I tend to like the
cement board too.

Thanks Maddog. I guess there might not be any "right" answer. But I agree, cement board beats the mud if you can avoid it. Much cleaner and easier. fact is, no one has given me any reason not to do it, just seems the "old timers' like to stick with what they know!.
happy remodeling!
Marc.
