Can anyone recommend this book, or maybe another instead? I’m mostly interested in techniques for free-standing walls of block with stone veneer, but also standard block and brick laying. 128 pages seems kinda thin.

Is there a standard reference book in this field?

I can't recommend anything, but I can tell you it's not in the book from Taunton.

Foundations and Masonry by Taunton devotes:
6 pages concerning basic brick laying techniques
5 pages concerning basic block laying techniques
5 pages concerning block laying with "B-Bond" being troweled onto it
8 pages describing freestanding stone walls that can be cast in place or simply drystacked
Everything else is devoted to foundation layouts, concrete work, and brick floor work.
If you have no knowledge of brick or block basics, and no knowledge of foundation work...then this book would help answer some of your questions and concerns. If you are looking for a book on advanced brick/block techniques,....... then this book is not the one for you.
Always try your local library. You may be pleasantly surprised...and the price is always right!

Dick Kreh: "Building with Masonry", 183 pages, also, coincidently, by Taunton. Lots of good info on the basics, but I don't remember anything on stone veneer.
