Massive but Minimal Maple Mantle

I was asked to build a heavy looking fireplace mantle that “worked” with the mass of an 8 foot wide brick fireplace. I built a maple box “timber” for the mantle and for corbels, I borrowed the scrollwork detail from the bottom of the posts of some train station brackets (from a project last winter).

    Brian,

    I like it... a lot. Corbels are proportioned just right for the size of the box beam as well. Less is more.
