The wife just finished the painting for our revamped Master Bedroom.
Removed old rug replaced with Maple with a black walnut border, reclad the fireplace surround and hearth with Granite, and pulled down a swirl finish plaster ceiling and put in the coffers with the indirect lighting above the crown.
Only took 4 months!!

nice...
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming
WOW!!! What a Ride!
Forget the primal scream, just ROAR!!!
Looks sharp.
Are your colors accurate? Looks to me like a beige wall, with blue/grey curtains? I might adopt that. And, what's your flooring made of? Solid wood or laminate?
I like the fireplace. But in my bedroom, the mantle would be covered with "stuff" in 2 days.
Don't worry about the 4 months, it was worth the wait.

Colors aren't perfect walls are closer to Yellow and the curtains green with a hint of blue.
Floor is solid 2 1/4" strip.
Beautiful! I love the ceiling, fireplace and floors. Great work!

Very nice. I like the ceilings. And the border on the floor is very nicely done. Makes a nice statement.
Pardon my fat fingers.
Very nice.

You're hired!
Explain the lighting details, please. Rope? Line voltage or low? If low, 12 or 24V? Juno Trac 12? Celestial?
Thanks you all for your comments.
I do need to thank all on this site, it is a great reference, use the info found here all the time.
Back to the coffers and lighting.
I resurected the model a took some pictures of it.
As you can see the whole thing is made from 1/2"MDF. I made small cleats(38 deg) with a notch to hold the rope light. these are spaced every foot or so.
The rope light is standard 1/2", 6 W/ft I think, found on the web. Went for the longest life stuff I could find, Replacing it won't be easy but not impossible.
Also interesting is how the coffers are built. Since I pulled down the swirl finish drywall. I did not bother to replaster, Instead I pre built each coffer square out of 1/2" MDF. Fortunately with the room size each square was just slightly less than 5 ft so I found 5x12 sheets of 1/2" MDF an started from there.
Assembly order
1) Attached the vertical coffer strip to each large coffer square panel. 2) Add the 1/2" x 1" cleat to the outside of the coffer vertical to latter accept the 3" wide coffer center.3) Attached the crown cleats.4) Taped over all future glue joints and sprayed primer on everything. including coffer center strips and cleats.
Everything up to now done in the shop.
5) Drill the holes for the ropelighting to get from one coffer to the others.6) Put up the coffers. This was interesting. I was prepared to use trim head screws to attached the center part of the mdf to the ceiling straping, but didn't need to. Instead because the coffers had been sitting upside down for the painting process and that took several weeks, they had delevoped a slight crown in the center. I used construction adhesive and screws around the outer edge, plus the 3rd hand clamps and they were up.7) Next the rope light. There are 6 separate loops in the pattern the exit in three places into the attic where they are just plugged in.8) Add the coffer centers and then the crown. and bed moulding around the edges.
Then a month of painting!!
Hopefully the pixs will make it clear.
Thanks again
Toolin
That looks great!
I like the whole thing, the coffered ceilings are nice, especially with the rope lighting.
You did good, as did your wife.

Schweeeeet!
Nice job Toolin'.
If you and the Missuz ever split....have her drop me a line. My wife likely would have prefered the "before" pics.
Great job brotha!

breathtaking! Be proud ma' man be proud.
Very nice Toolin.
We often do a step ceiling / rope lighting detail in the Master Bedroom. In the pic is a double step. Bottom step has 1 x 6 attached to first level ceiling with crown. The rope lighting is behind the first step crown. Makes nice "mood" lighting for a bedroom.
It is a nice touch, but no where near the level of craftsmanship applied to your ceiling.
I do make points with clients when they come with a one story Master Bedroom area and I tell them about the idea to step the ceiling, and add the trim and lighting. It is an easy sell, and relatively inexpensive.

Nice look, I pondered doing that in our master for several years till this idea came along, we have attic above. but I didn't want to lose the storage. I first saw this style in a corporate conference room, really like the indirect lighting.
Very, very nice. Well thought out and well crafted. And ONLY four months! My wife and I slept in our west parlor for nearly a year ... and all I had to do in our bedroom was install additional outlets, patch plaster, scrape woodwork and paint!

In the pic is a double step.
Do you have a single step version too? With lighting? Pics?

Yes, we do a single step version, a pic is attached with rope lighting on.
This is in a Master Bedroom. See also the crown and dropped "F" mold wall trim.
This wall trim detail, along with the step ceiling is very popular. In this case the HO had us paint the wall gap between the crown and the F molding the regular wall color. Other variations are to paint the created section in the trim color, or paint the section in an accent color (usually much darkler). Also, if the HO picks a wall paper border we will drop the molding the width of the border and install the wall paper border. All good looking details with much more value than expense.

Nice job, with the lower ceilings (8' ?) do you feel like the ceiling is coming down? you don't see that many coffered ceiling with lower heights, as it can make the room feel smaller. Anyway nice work.
Jeff
Had the same concern so kept the coffers overall pretty shallow. 3.25 inches.
But now that it is done it doesn't feel any smaller.
In fact the recess panel(painted a slightly darker color than the trim) gives the ceiling more depth. Making it feel bigger.
Thanks,
Whew! Hope dw appreciates all that work. Sure looks nice.
