I recently did a Kerdi install for a surround shower, I wanted to speed up a little and decided to use mastic as a bonding agent after talking to the rep. at the local tile shop. The walls worked fine but the mastic didn’t set up between the the pan and Kerdi. I took the Kerdi off and let the mastic set up. Now I’m worried about the whole thing being a week bond. Has this happened to anyone else?

At $150.00 a roll, I can't understand why you would not abide by the instructions.
I'd go back to that "rep. at the local tile shop" and call his boss out onto the carpet.
I'd put a call into a real rep at Schluter at this point in time.

Tile mastic and modified thinset both dry by evaporation; they do not set. Kerdi (and other tile membranes such as Ditra) are waterproof...so they prevent any evaporation from happening. That is why Schlüter instructs you to use unmodified thinset between their membranes and any impervious substrate or tile. Unmodified thinset sets by chemical reaction; once it is hydrated it will harden even inside a plastic bag or sealed bucket.
At the very least, you are going to need to start over again with new Ditra. Throw out the mastic-contaminated stuff. And unless you can get every bit of that dried mastic off that shower pan, you'll have to tear that out, too.
Finally, as Eric mentioned, if your local tile-store guy really did tell you it was okay to use mastic on Kerdi (and if you can prove he said it) you have a pretty good claim against him to replace the materials you ruined following his incorrect instructions.

I'd like to save what is there, if I peel back the Schluter membrane and let the mastic dry, do you think I would have any problems reapplying with an unmodified? Will they adhere to each other?
Thank you for your input!
"if I peel back the Schluter membrane and let the mastic dry,"That is a mighty big IF there! I have seen twenty year old mastic that was not fully "set up", and this is a floor of a shower where it will see a lot of water. You already have something screwed up by ignoring the manufacturers specific instructions.Learn from that mistake instead of compounding it.Believe me, this is right up there with using diesel in a gas tank or mixing oil and latex paint in the same can.get that mastic off the pan if you can do it without poking holes in it, give it a few days to dry the residue, and then do it right. If it won't come up, you need the pan renewed.

Thank you for the advice. I definitely will lean from the mistake!

Don't lean to far. If I leaned from all the mistakes I've made, I'd be horizontal by now.View Image

Nah. You'd just fall off the roof.
