material for shower ceiling/BR walls

Hello:
What material should I use for the flat seven foot ceiling in my hot water shower? All the sides will be tiled up to the ceiling but the ceiling will not be tiled. A vapor proof can will be installed in the ceiling too. There will be a ventilation fan outside the shower on the eight foot ceiling. I did not think it was too big of a concern but the plumber thought otherwise and suggested tiling it because it is flat. I thought of using 1/4 inch hardibacker because it is smooth and I can paint it with a moisure type proof paint. The area above is a bedroom.
What is the product to use on the bathroom walls, densshield? These walls will be tiled 42 inches up and then painted above.
Thank you,
Mike

Everything fits, until you put glue on it.
Thanks for your opinion.

I have done many showers with the tile going all the way to the ceiling. I have always done the ceiling with drywall. Primed and painted. You say your putting in a fan, use a timer switch and you should be ok. What do you mean by a hot water shower? Do you mean a steam shower, if you do then that is an other story.
No it isn't steam I just wanted to emphasize that it isn't steam. Thanks for the tip.

Just wanted to check. When you wrote hot water shower I was a little confused. I've only seen cold water showers outside of beach houses. My two showers are used by my three teenage daughters who take long, hot and very steam filled showers. I have never had an issue with the drywall ceiling. Putting a timer on the fan switch makes a bid difference.
You could always use a cellular PVC material like AZEK . . . sheet material or beadboard planks.
Love Azek also, beadboard now comes in sheet goods too.
I too use only MR sheetrock for the ceiling with a good primer and good paint.
I also installed a light/fan "in" the shower ceiling. One made for the shower area.
Never ever had a problem.

I use PermaWhite in kitchens and baths.
having an exhaust fan will do wonders too.

I use 4X8 sheets of FRP (fiberglass reinforced plastic). It glues on with FRP adhesive.
It comes in several colors choices; including white, grey, and bone. This material is used a lot in commercial bathroom settings cause it is easy to wipe down. It has a pebbled texture. You can glue it to drywall or even regular plywood.
In my own basement shower, I used MR drywall for my ceiling backer, and glued the FRP directly to it. This shower stall is only 3FT square. The ceiling has a moisture proof recessed can light as well. This shower gets lots of use...no adverse problems.
My upstairs shower also has an FRP ceiling, but the backer I used here was plywood.
I have built several showers where the walls and the ceiling were all finished with FRP. In some cases the backer substrate was drywall, and in others it was plywood. Never had any problems with moisture/water infiltration using either backer substrate.
