MDF beadboard in bathroom

cameraman | Posted in General Discussion on December 18, 2009 11:54am

If I primer all sides and paint well, would MDF be useable in a bathroom? Not in the tub area but next to a bath vanity.

    Yes.

We did it but I would not recommend it. Under our pedestal sink mdf the molding bowed out when water leaked down and then the surface flaked off. On the mdf beadboard wall, next to the shower enclosure the surface also flaked off where a small amount of moisture contacted it. I would go with solid wood in the future.

It worked fine for me. Painted all sides and sealed all the trim joints and seams with silicon caulk.

Matt, I hope you meant siliconized latex caulk, as silicone would be a nightmare the first time you went to paint or recaulk.

By the way, could you respond to my email I sent you and the boys a couple weeks ago re: Rez

      thanks.

I've done it that way but I
I've done it that way but I was always paranoid about what would happen in the future.

The last two times I used beadboard in a wet area I used Azek . . . once the sheet and once the individual planks. It was still painted just to hide that plastic look but this should last indefinitely.

Oh, I used SS fasteners so there'd be no chance of rust bleed through.

    They've come out with
They've come out with 1/4-5/16" pvc beadboard that works much better in the bathroom, though may be a little pricier. I just finished using it in a clients bathroom reno, and she loved it. I used standard base and made my own cap and chair rails from poplar.

I have not been able to find the PVC board, did find some nice real plywood 4x8 paneling. Looked nice, knots, nice clean beads, should take paint well. I'll prime it up and feel safer with this product.

That a real hefty toilet supply you have there!!!

The toilet supply mimicked the rest of the construction. I had to use a demo hammer on the tile: 1.5" concrete mortar bed on steel mesh, all around the walls and to the ceiling in the tub. Buttonball bed, I think it is called. Took a week to demo just the tile, bed, and lath. Any wonder the shower leaked like crazy?

Wow, Demo that will make the house lighter!!!

I had pretty much the same set up on the floor of this second floor bathroom that's getting the beadboard.

With the plastered wall I was afraid of cracking the walls below!!

          Not a crack!!
