Ron,
I can only assume that MDF is the same the world over. Some love it some hate it. I don't mind it for some applications. If you are painting pay attention to machined edges. Get them well sanded as they fur up a bit.Screw your work together, pre-drill your holes.

MDF is quite alright to work with, it
machines nicely, paints up well - if you seal first
with a non-latex primer, but; it weighs a ton
(have lots of help on hand to help move the
finished entertainment centre {yes, we spell it
differently}) and I find the corners are slightly
more susceptible to damage.
Be prepared for lots of fine dust, and then be
prepared for more fine dust!
