Is there a set standard or code size requirement for the sizing of a mechanical’s room? What size seems to work? Square or rectangle?

depends on what you are puting in it. Kind of like a boat. I remoed one house that has three mech rooms ranging in size from 8x9 to 11x14
See, if you have electric heat, the servoice panel will take up a lot less room than a boiler and a spread of manfolds and circulation pumps.
How 'bout the oil tanbk(s) inside or out?
Water - How big the pressure tank(s)
What you have to do is decide what is going in there, the size of each item, whether you are required to have certain setbacks, how comfortable your subcontrators are with a submaruine type environmet...and then plan it out.

Tileman,
My comment is that it is extremely rare to see a properly sized mechanical room. Almost every designer makes the same mistake: the room is too small. Anybody out there ever seen a mechanical room that was too big? So, design it for the equipment you expect to go in there, and then add 50% to the square feet you think you need. The extra room will be filled by all the equipment you forgot about, and maybe even leave enough room for somebody to work on the equipment when it needs servicing.
