This weekend brought 26″ of snow on my 60’s vintage 4 in 12 pitch truss roof. The forecast promises another 2″, this time with rain. Concerned about the weight, I was thinking of leaving the access door open to get some warm air up there to accelerate the melting. I know letting warm air up there on a long term basis can produce condensation, but I’m wondering about the benefits of getting the snow melted off quickly. Thoughts?

You're not the firstone to have had this thought.
and not the first one to have repair bills for new ceiling paint.
It only takes a few days to produce voluminous amounts of water that way.
I;'m thinking roof rakes or a shovel.
or
just wait it out.

Chuck, We got dumped on like that a couple years ago. The following spring I had several water damage repair jobs caused by ice damming. When I saw what was happing along the east coast I knew many guys like me are going to have plenty of work coming up.
Forcing the snow to melt off the roof while the outside temp is low will greatly increase the likelihood of an ice dam and subsequent water damage. I highly suggest getting the snow off the roof and soon before any damming starts. Either use a roof rake or pay somebody to shovel it off if you can't do it yourself safely. The latter is way cheaper than damage repair.

Letting warm air into the attic might speed up melting the snow, which could help with the weight issue. Just be careful about ice dams and maybe use a roof rake to safely remove some snow. Long-term, think about better insulation and ventilation to prevent these problems. Quick fixes work for now, but making sure your roof can handle snow in the future is a good idea. In my house, due to melting snow, the roof began to leak, most likely exactly where the attic windows were installed. When I bought this house the skylights were already there, now I need to repair or replace the skylights, do you know who I can contact for help?
