The church volunteered me to build a partition wall. I figured on metal studs and 5/8 firecode drywall. Attaching to the concrete floor and steel I-beam above is relatively easy (Remington makes the proper tool). But the wall butts against a concrete block wall. What works well for mounting the studs here?

Prescriptive codes don't address the connection at less common angles, so base the connection off more typical ones using bolts, structural screws, blocking, and steel tension ties.

John, just finished a job similar. used 20g. angle stock, 2 x 2". cut to about 3" lengths and tapconed into the blocks plumb the wall and attach plate to stud. we were doing 12+foot walls and used 2 per stud. As this was a perimeter wall and we could not anchor top plate, we hit every other stud for 4foot centers.
if your partition wall is running perpendicular from the block, then tapcon right thru the last stud into the block.
walk good

*John,I've had success with butting a perpendicular partition to block by using 20 ga. studs at the ends (we usually always use this gauge all the way through) and shooting a Hilti (or remington) fastener with a large "stop" washer into the block. If this doesn't "feel" sturdy enough, shoot the end stud on then wrap the open side with a piece of track. This is nice and firm. By the way, when we shoot into block, we try to hit close to the webs. I use a Hilti DX-41, and sometimes if I shoot into the core the fastener blows right through, even at a low power setting. Good Luck.Nathan
