Thomas,
I have used Project for several years. It is a very powerful project manager. It does take some time to learn and set up views, reports, etc. It is also very good for the fact it can track multiple projects, progress and resource management. You could actually manage building something as large as the Empire State building using this!
So much for the goodies. It does require a very dedicated and complete input of data, times etc. I say this because it is very time consuming. Be prepared to spend a lot of manhours on this. Small projects would not see much benefit from using this software. You will spend more time on the software than on the project. It is good for larger and multiple projects.
Hope this helps.

I must agree with Thom about this program. I had many hours of great fun looking at it, but could not come up with an efficient way to use it for managing one to several single family projects at a time.
*I've used P98(and its predecessors) with much success(benefit) from 2,500sf TI to a 300,000sf broadcast studio with subterrainian parking. It would be tedious on a single single-family project. But once you setup the first job, you'll have a template for life! I keep a collection of old project files on hand to use as a template, then customize for new jobs.
*On smaller projects, it's still great for planning even if you don't use it for tracking once the job starts.
*MS Project seems to be best suited for small projects. For large design or construction projects something like Primavera might be used and is much more pricey and complex. I use MS Project98 for a remodel I am doing on my own home and it's perfect. It's way faster than tracking notes, costs, and critical paths by hand. It gets me to really think things out first, prior to starting the work.
