hi mike,
i’ve found two contractors who use cellulose. i spoke to nearest one a couple of days ago. he has said that it is a more expensive than regular FG installed, is this the case?
now, my knowledge of cellulose is very limited, so here are the Q.’s.
he has said he prefers to spray damp, what are the good and bad of this?
is there any need for a vapor barrier?
any other issues i should know about?
i appreciate your help, if you have the time.
thanks and good luck

geesh, eddie .. i saw this yesterday and typed a great response.. then my isp connection disconnected...so...
where do i go and when does your B&B open?
should i bring my clubs or do you have an extra set?
anyways... the damp spray cellulose is my 2d favorite .. ahead of fiberglass blown-in.. way ahead of fiberglass batts.. 2d only to dens-pak cellulose..
damp spray tends to pull away slightly from the framing as it drys.. if you can talk your cellulose guy into blowing thru the gypsum board with a 1" nozzle. he can do dens-pak.. and he may love it.. if not go with what he's used to unless you can find someone else..
or if you can get the material ( i pay $6.75 for a 26 lb. bag ) and rent a machine.. you can blow it yourself.. it's NOT rocket-science
b but hey, whadda i no ?
*mike, thanks for the info. don't know about the golf, but your welcome to drop by, if i ever get this of the paper and onto the ground.thanksgood luck
*Any idea about the difference in achieved density in dense pak vs. wet blow ?Isb xMike Smith Rhode Island Mike incognito ?
*it's me.. no incognito about it.. just a screwy isp and tough logging in..
*Did you forget your password for Breaktime ?
*xwell, xduh.. yeah..i mean you use the xdumb xxthing once 18 months xago and now yur xsupposed to xremember xit ?sides xthat, my email is screwed xup too.. so .. i can receive ,but i can't trans
*Eddie. Mike is correct: wet-spayed cellulose, as it dries, pulls away slightly from the framing. However, this seesm to be true for sprayed cellulose that is too wet: more the 40 percent moisture by weight. Mike, have you found the pulling away to be true no matter how little water is used? GeneL.
*gene.. i haven't found anything.. there is a guy in town who's been doing wet spray for a couple years.... he did the building inspector's house.. the building inspector is teh one who told me about the shrinkage... to the point that in some of the bays the whole thing fell out and so tehy just piked it up and slipped it back into the bay as a block..the new spray equipment is damp spray.. not wet spray... as you state... but i'm guessing that the main advantage is less drying time, rather than less shrinkage... obviously less water = less shrinkage, but any shrinkage would be unkind...so .. the main advantages of wet spray is it can be done before the drywall is in place but after the wiring and rough-in.... the inspector can SEE it.. so he can confirm the insulation... but it still has considerable clean-up longer application times and higher costs.. the regal wall can do all those things too, but it is messy, and needs adjusting just like wet spray to get the insulation back into the plane of the studs so it doesn't interfere with the gypsum... the easiest is blowing the wall THRU the gypsum... great compaction for DP.. but always the CHANCE that there MAY be some voids.. AND.. the inspector may not allow it.. though they have never stopped me..never hurts to check first...so.. my bottom line... i'll probably use regal wall again... and if i need an b energy wall, i'll add EPS and furring to the interiorGene.. my discussions with you and others here got me over the hump of using EPS.. it has sure opened a lot of possibilities for us....and the borate treated EPS (Performguard ) has answered my main concern about vermin thriving in foam installations....now question for you, gene... eddie has a quandry.. not very many options for him in Ireland.. my gut says go with the cellulose and work with the installer with the experience.. even if it's wet / damp spray.. what do you think ?
*Eddie,is sprayed on polyruathane foam available in Ireland? If you use wet or damp applied cellulose will require a vb and additional sealing on any post and beam construction.
*Mike. Thanks for your comments on sprayed-in cellulose. As for Eddie's predicament, I concur with your gut feeling and woud go with cellulose. GeneL.
*LFred, ther is such an option but is approx. 10times the cost of FG. so it is not a viable option.Gene and Mike, thanks for the info, i'll will have a good long chat with the cellulose guy, to see what he say's and comnpare the cost, then i'll get back to you and see if you lot think the extra cost (whatever it is), is worth it.thanks and good luck
*That's too bad it's so expensive in Ireland. We did it on our last post and beam and the results were incredible and the cost was compatible.
