I joined the mile high club today. That is,..a mile up in my gyrocopter. I went up to 6100 ASL and what a view. It was a lot cooler up there.

awesome stan.
is your engine tach really at 4500 rpms ? is this a two stroke ?
carpenter in transition
Tim: Actually it is indicating over 4700 rpm. It is a 130 horse Subaru EJ22 engine. 4 cylinder....4 stroke. It is a real tough engine and the red line is 5500 rpm.
Dangit Stan !
I been hoodwinked. I been scammed. I been burgled.
For getting us in here with a misleading title like that... Especially that one... I am officially banning you.
Until the next time you post.

Waitaminnit !
That's ...not... the rudder contol you're holding, is it ?
EEEEEEWWWWWWW !!!!!!!!!!!!
Ok, That's it. I have to really get tough now.
Yer banned until the third time you post.

Luka: gotcha...I had to have a catchy title....
It worked ... But why did you wait so long...
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming.... WOW!!! What a Ride!
Yeah, caught me too -- esp since the Seattle to Copenhaven flight are configured with a WINDOW in the RR.
Stan-
I always enjoy your flying pics. Thanks.
I guess you got your shop and yard cleaned up enough to get some flying in.
I remember way back one crisp fall day ....
show up for the flight lessons and for some reason or another my instructor wanted a "day off" ... so we decided to just go up and have fun ...
nice "thick air" day .. the old C-152 was really performing great ...
it was the beginning of fall ... one of the last days I was insisting was still warm enough to wear shorts ...
anyways .. we start climbing ... he's falling asleep in the right seat ...
so I decide to just keep climbing ... let's see what this "service ceiling" is all about ...
It was somewhere over 14K ... and I was determined to get there ...
we made some quick calculations and called in a flight plan for what ever little airport would be the right direction and distance away ... gave full throttle ... and pulled back the yoke ...
I climbed the whole time ... I remember the last coupla thousand feet it was like going no where and getting there slow ...
in the end .. we were about 14K .... somewhere over the hills of W Va I think ...
then after she'd go no more .... andf I started to think about supplimental oxygen ...
we started out slow spiral decent .... which also was lotsa fun.
As we'd lucked out with the winds .. we were pretty much centered above our target airport ... nothing to do but slowly circle down ...
after we landed ... I felt a burning on my left leg ...
here. ... the air coming in thru the door ... was cold enough to give me a little freezer burn on the bare skin!
added to the "cool factor" ...
can't remember just how long it took ... but it was freaking forever!

Stan ,You had holes in the clouds today? seemed like all I had was clouds and rain. Raining now .
Jeff: Good story on your 152 service ceiling. The highest I have ever flown as a pilot was 7500 feet in my dads Cherokee 180. I can only imagine how small things look at 14000 feet.
One note.....I used to have a Bensen gyrocopter...you know..the flying lawn chair ....anyway...since I was out in the open..I never liked flying much over 2000 feet in it. There wasnt much sense of movement up that high and I would get a little uneasy...so down I would come to get the ground moving again.
But in the one I have now..with the enclosed cabin..I could just stay up there all day.

LOL, I'm glad to see the key in the "run" position!
But I've walked at 14K feet with both of mine still on solid ground.
;)
Great views either way

Brass ones Stan.....Brass ones. Dont know how you do it man. I cant get up on an 8 foot ladder without starting to worry.
Awesome!
Stan,
Very cool. Any road trips planned with that thing?
Jon
Jon: I am flying to Shelbyville, Il. in two weeks to a gyrocopter fly-in. It will be just a short flight of 82 miles.
Stan,
Just did a Mapquest. That looks like Dixie country, no? Anyways, I guess it's all pretty flat down there, so not much to worry about if you ever have an engine failure. Have a safe trip.
Jon
Nice and safe! Notice that he doesn't even wear his shin-gaurds and kneepads in case of a hard landing! LOL

Well I KNEW there had to be some aerial shots (finished stair project usually means a bit of air time)! I just needed to hit refresh to see the gyro posting show up.
Looks like a blast, Stan, but I suspect the first time up in something like that I'd probably be white-knuckling the arm rest.
How many people show up for the fly-ins? Is it restricted to gyros? We will be expecting some good lake pics when you get back. Maybe you could attach pontoons and make a gyro-duck. Get a line wet, maybe catch dinner, and then fly home. Sounds like a good time.

John: The fly-ins are welcome to all aircraft. Mainly gyrocopters are there though. The Shelbyville fly-in isnt that huge...maybe 15 gyros....but its a lot of fun seeing everyone flying something different.
Here are some shots from my last flyin...there were about 60 gyrocopters at this one.
Sheeze, that first one in line looks like a flying lawn chair (pic "y"). Don't think I'd want to go up to 6k ft in that thing!
But heeeeey, its got me thinking. Lets see, I could get a lawn chair off the deck, mount it on a 4x4, take the wheels off my nephew's bike to put under the 4x4, strip the Lawn Chief push mower down to an engine & blade, and mount that on the 4x4 behind the lawn chair. Hack off the push broom handle to make control rods... Hmm.. but I still need a rotor. What could I use for a rotor? Maybe I could find an old bush hog blade. ;)
Your gyro looks like a Lear jet compared to that first one in line.
Looks like a puller in the background of that pic.

Why not just hook a bunch of healium balloons to the lawn chair? Its been done. Dont forget the bb gun <G>
I'm just waiting for the next batch of gyro pics. Stan finished TWO staircases, so it should be gyro time by my reckoning.jt8
John: Here is a flying shot from the ground. Stan
I think you've already posted that one. Wasn't that from the Shelbyville fly-in?jt8
Hey - whoa there giro! Bet you get in before you start that thing next time.Kevin Halliburton And with that, the great emporer Oz gently floated away on a curtain of hot air, laughing at the unfortunate ignorance of little people beneath him. But under his breath he cursed that stupid little dog...
Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeet! Great photos Stan.
