Hi all,
I need to replace my ol’ 5.5 amp Milwaukee 1/2″ magnum Drill. I was looking at several differnt places and see there is now an 8 amp which is significantly lighter.
It has much more plastic but…8 amps is substantial. Oh yea the 8 amp is usually $20 cheaper.
Any opinions on either?

Nice....., Sweet......, other than that I like it.
I picked up an 0300-20 recently, higher power to weight ratio than the magnums. I like it fine.

5.5 amps is fine thank you. Darn near tore off a thumb with my magnum and a holesaw when it jammed up. 8 amps is probably too much. There isn't much to hold onto on a pistol drill, so I kind of like them to stall out rather than breaking my hand if they jam up. I like the design of the Magnums better than the new ones too, but I'm a old fuddy duddy.
Didn't you read the warning label on the drill ("HIGH ROTATING FORCE")? I love that drill. I agree with you, for 5.5 amps, that thing will take your arm off if it binds. Additionally, I don't think amperage is always the best measure of a drill's power. There's efficiency and gearing to consider.
Don't know about the new drill but Milwaulkee usually has a pretty good track record with new stuff. The old Magnums are well proven and have plenty of cajones. For me it would come down to how it felt in my hands. Many of the newer drills fom many manufacturers are longer and they feel nose heavy to me. The more compact size of the older drills could be an advantage in tight situations.
