How big is it?
I ask because I own a "chipping" (spline drive)sized one by Milwalkee and with out a bit in it and pressing the bit against something it would appear to do the same.
has a clutch that engages only when the bit is pressed against something.
it's pretty big,a step under a jackhammer i'd say.i wonderd about that,so i had put a big screwdriver in it and got nothing. maybe i should go buy a bit and see,it would be a shame to throw it and find outit wasn't bad.thanks larryif a man speaks in the forest, and there's not a woman to hear him,is he still wrong?
I think it takes a fair amount of force to engage the hammer function. I don't know if a screwdriver would cut it.
Why not hang on to it until you need it, then rent one, try the rental bit in yours and if it works, return the rental early.
It sounds like the same one I have. "ThunderBolt" model, 5308 If it is go rent a bit and try it out before dumping it.
( I would rent a bit and try it out even if it isn't the same model) Found a craigs list with a pic. http://houston.craigslist.org/tls/780461501.html

Larry, I know we've got several tool repair shops here in town.
I've just never used any of them
For example, there is the Dewalt factory authorized repair shop at 155 South West Street
Sears has their repair shop on East Kellogg - which is where they also sell their damaged and returned tools.
And anything which is damaged or reconditioned
I bought a really nice "reconditioned" vacuum there at Sears and I only paid $40
Probably a lot of these tools are considered to be disposable and not worth the cost to repair?
