Mineral Wool Board – acceptable usage?
I want to insulate the ceiling of my basement workshop to minimize my cold basement from chilling the room above. Another bonus would be to minimize sound transfer. My basement is only 6’ 7†to the bottom of the joist. In addition I have a few pipes that hang just below the joist. Due to this, I don’t want to sheetrock it. I’m thinking about using uncovered 2†or 3†8# mineral wool board friction fitted in between the joist. This should permit me enough room to hang florescent lights.

Is it safe to use mineral wool boards uncovered? It won’t be getting poked, but it will get vibration since the room above gets a lot of traffic.

You talking e.g. celotex fiberboard? Don't know. Is it impregnated w/ oil based 'stuff' (I know, it's a technical term)? Why don't you just cut some acoustical ceiling tile and use that? Better [acoustical]] application plus you know it is OK. Plus the lighter color will reflect light better. Better to work with, too. And you can probably get it for dirt cheap ... e.g. some used tiles w/ rough around the edges.
I don't think its oil impregnated. I'm pretty sure owens corning has a version of it, but I found this link and it looks like the same stuff.

Thanks for the ceiling tile idea, but don't think that will give me much R value. However I do like the idea of knocking the price down, mineral wool board cost more then I expected.
Right, it's not what I thought it might be. I think you are NOT choosing the right product. The product is stated as 'high temperature insulation'. I don't think that is what you might be looking for. Acoustical ceiling tile actually has reasonable insulation qualities. It is a fiborous product that is usally 5/8" or better thickness. I'm guessing it's R-value at least as good as this other stuff ... which I couldn't understand and translate the thermal properties at the site you gave us.
