I am not a professinal carpenter, but a fairly accomplished amateur. I use a Milwaukee 10″ Compound Miter saw and have had good luck with it. A friend of mine, a professional contractor, has had the same experience, but relates a different one with a 12″ DeWalt. He feels the blades get too big for the bearings and accuracy suffers. As for a power planer, I have a Dewalt DW677K and find it satisfactory. If I were to do over, I would spring for a PC with a tilting fence. Now back to you. I find that in my trim work my miters are opening up as I do them. I am using a Senco 15 Ga for the casing on the trimmers, but a 18Ga for the casing on the jams. I am considering buying a 16 Ga brad gun to replace the 18. Comments and experience with brands.

I love my 12" Dewalt compound miter with the single exception that the thin kerf blade may be too thin- it flutters some times. I love the feel of the 10" Milwaukee, but you can stick a 4X6 in my Dewalt. I hate having so much yellow stuff,but I also have found no fault with my DW biscuit joiner.
*cc, I'd stay away from any more Delta miter saws, all are very cheesy, along with Ryobi and Freud. All the DeWalts are accurate ( that thin kerf blade comment is true in my experience also, get a thicker one and keep it SHARP). Makita 1211, 12" sliding dually is my favorite. Most bang for the buck. DeWalt plate joiner is nice. I haven't tried the new Porter Cable, but it sure looks nice, and I have heard good things about it.
*Dennis, 18 ga. brads alone won't do it. 16 ga. can split the casing and/or jamb. I use 1/4" crown 3/4" long staples on painted casings (Bostich makes a good, inexpensive gun).On bright or stain work I use 18 ga. brads and glue on the jamb. I also biscuit the miters. They stay put. Just be careful to clean up any gluey mess, or it will show.
*Lonecat I to have the yellow problem. About 75% of my tools are Dewalt. When it comes to tools you can get some funny answers about what people like. I'm a big fan of the Porter cable 315 and 316 skill saws. Can't stand their new "framers saws" with the saw dust chute. One of my guys have a new Dewalt half breeds and it's a great saw. Still use my old skill worm drive for heavy duty stuff. As far as what to get? Go put it in your hand and see how it's fits. Was at a tool show and a sales man was tring to sell me a 15 amp saw at what was a good price. Problem was the handle removed the skin off my fingers because the handle opening was to small.

Re: PC Biscuit Tool - Bought one a few months back. Seems to work well. But there seems to be a theme to all these comments about tool brands. Whether something is or is not good depends on the user and the use.

I have had my trusty sawbuck for ten years now and I am about to retire her to the siding projects, I just trimed a house with it and had a hard time with the joints. I guess shes showing her age.
Anyhow i am looking to make a purchase of a compound miter saw.
Does anyone have one they would reccommend and what to stay away from?
Hell, I might as well buy that power planer and biscut joiner I've always wanted. Any suggestions there?
