We have a tongue and groove wooden porch ceiling finished with clear polyurethane. It’s about 20 years old, and now huge black patches have developed, which I assume is mold.
What is the best (meaning easiest) way to restore this ceiling to something attractive, preferably natural wood finish?

What is the best (meaning easiest) way....
You do realize that you may be asking two different questions here.

I'm not sure how a porch ceiling would get moldy or mildewy unless there's a leak in the roof above it...you'll need to address that first, the water is coming from somewhere.
Fix the leak.

Where I live - NC - a little mold/mildew on the porch ceiling would not be considered very unusual - maybe even the norm, especially on the north side of the house. In other words - you don't need to have a moisture source investigation when the humidity is 95%... Matt
That would generally be simple mildew that can be washed off with a chlorine and water mix and a scrub brush on a long handle.
Unless it is hiding in the wood behind the poly. Then the above advice about finding source of the water is paramont.
Restoring dry wood is simply done by sanding back to ther wood.
