Moldy soffits – how to clean and how to protect?
Hello Ladies and Gentlemen,
We have some beautiful hemlock soffits on our house but the wet PNW winter weather is really doing a number on them. The hemlock boards were sealed with Daly’s Ship N’ Shore but there is a lot of algae/mold growing on them. No leaks in the roof, just a constant moist and cold breeze. One thing I did notice: the algae/mold growth seems worse where the wood is roughest. Seems like the moisture gathers mostly at these rougher spots, so some sanding might be in order as well.
Two questions:
1) What’s the best way to clean and brighten the algae/mold stains without damaging the wood?
2) What’s the best way and the best product to reseal and protect against and prevent further growth and damage?
I’d appreciate any advice from some of the experts here, thanks!

1) Hydrogen peroxide or white distilled vinegar
White distilled vinegar or hydrogen peroxide may be a cleaning solutions
The fungus that causes dark stains on wood is afraid of hydrogen peroxide and other drugstore antiseptics. Moisten a cotton pad with peroxide and apply it to the stain. If it starts to disappear, the treatment will need to be repeated several more times. In addition to peroxide, you can use ammonia alcohol.
I would try sodium percarbonate, aka, OxyClean first and see how it works. Soffits are tough to keep clean. I don't know of a sealer that would work as all sides of the wood need to be treated.
If you try the oxyclean, rinse well all areas as when dry, any surface takes on a white leftover.
Thank you all, I'll give that a try!! Much appreciated!
Mix a solution of 1 tablespoon dishwashing detergent, 1/2 cup chlorine bleach, and 1 cup warm water. Apply the mixture to the stained area with a soft-bristled brush, and allow it to air-dry. My dad always used it.
