Momma’s new cello –

DavidxDoud | Posted in Photo Gallery on November 1, 2009 02:09am

DW has been waiting 35 years for a decent instrument –

this afternoon we drove up to South Bend to a great musical instrument store and she played a few instruments and picked out this new German made instrument –

View Image

she had been playing the same instrument she had in high school – like building with cheap tools, satisfaction is limited – but there was never any money left over for something better –

costing something more than my ‘new’ jointer and planer, it moves a lot easier…

Well it's about time then.  I admire people who play musical instruments and I think they should be encouraged.  Music just adds so much to our lives.

Each of my 3 kids plays an instrument.  2 actively and the 3rd is on hiatus.  I hope it's something that they carry with them for the rest of thier lives.

I can totally relate. Even though I make a living as a computer nerd, and I'm an avid DIY homebuilder and tool freak, I had a previous life where I did a Bachelor of Music and gigged for years as a jazz musician.

Your analogy of cheap instruments = cheap tools is dead on. I've got two pro-quality horns (alto and soprano sax) and a beater of a tenor. There is no comparison.

    Play on!!

The cello is one of my top 5 favorite instruments. It has a real soulful quality to it that stirs one to the depths.

Yeah, empty nest is a hoot isn't it? I'm about to to purchase a few things I've been waiting some years for, now that the two knee kickers are on their own. (well...the youngest has one more year)

Congats to Valerie. It's about time, huh?

24yo DD takes cello lessons and plays in her hubby's band.

(She and her 22 yo cousin also takes belly dancing class, and perform. Makes for a nice waistline, for sure.)

no name - probably won't be, there's no history of naming instruments in our family - but if I had to say, it sounds male to me - very strong voice, particularly in the lower register - I offered to engrave her name on it, like I do with my tools, but she's declined - "there's enough for everyone"

Does she tweak her own sound peg?  You may want to learn some luthier tricks , like how to inspect the innards for rattles if they develop.

The bass bar is often the first rattle. check braces and linings as  needed esp when woodstove season is upon us.

Some use humidifiers in winter, I employ a dish spong in a baggie, pierced with a fork, to help keep the inside from getting too dry.

a good friend is a violin maker - I don't repair stringed instruments - V has a couple of those noodle like things you dip in water and hang in the f holes - we've had to play the 'wild swings in temp/humidity' game with all the instruments for 35 years - I know it's hard on them, but such is the farm life - hope things are going well with you all - we just started renovating the 'ancestral estate' yesterday - opened 13 casement windows for the first time in 20+ years - scrape, relieve, prime, etc today - still trying to get the last of the apples in and run business - you should be in pretty good shape to face the winter? (at least better than a few years ago, I hope)D"there's enough for everyone"

Well yeah, things are shaping up here.

I'd figure 95% of the structural repairs are long done, the few that remain are not pressing.

Weatherized wise, we be leak free, and really got the drafts sealed up well. Much more human friendly than the year before. Every year I gain some ground on the wood consumption.

We're now in the comfort/incidentals phase, like tearing up old carpet in the addition and asessing the subfloor prior to the cedar going down.

Then well move on to pretty it up phase and landscaping. Just getting the chimney stone up and painting the roof made a world of difference.

I know I'll never run out of honeydew list for sure.

Fresh eggs, beans hung to dry upstairs, freezer full, over a 100 jars of canned goods put up..I'd say I'm gaining on it..LOL. Oh, the very first winter in I dunno how long, I am set with 4 cords already ..let it rip, I'm ready.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

she had been playing the same instrument she had in high school - like building with cheap tools, satisfaction is limited..

She's a very patient person, to wait so long.   Acoustic stringed instruments show their limitations to students within days of beginning to play.

I remember my first classical guitar.  Sounded pretty much like the others in the shop when I bought it.  It only took a few hours of practicing major chords at home to know that the sound box wasn't nearly optimum.

I went back to the shop, Sidney Locker's across from Lincoln Center, and asked to try a few chords on a better instrument.  Viola!

Unfortunately, I didn't have nearly enough income to afford that lovely guitar.  It was mildly frustrating to know what I was missing with the basic box.
