Some of you may rememeber I talked about building a cabinet for my Mom. I just got it done this morning, and thought I’d post a picture of it.
Sorry about the file size – It’s hard to get that big of a cabinet all in one picture. So I only posted one picture. If anyone is seriously interested I’ll post more.
Mom has seen it, and she’s thrilled. I figure she’ll have it full of junk in no time. (-:
.
I suppose anyone who builds something is always their own worst critic – There are definitely things I’m not 100% happy with.
Dad could have had a cabinet shop build one, and it probably would have been built better. (and faster) But hopefully this will mean more to Mom since her Son built it for her.
The fact that it’s DONE is also significant. But that’s a long story. Maybe I’ll post more about Mom’s kitchen later. Gotta head out right now.
Hope you’re all having a good weekend…

Hey Boss-
nice work!
I was wondering recently how you were doing with that cabinet. Glad to see the finished job.
Nice job for a guy that majors in trusses. <G>
I'm sure she'll be thrilled with it and you should be, too.
Here's a smaller size for folks (like me) on dial-up.

Nice work!

Nice work Ron! How about some more details? How'd you do the drawers? What's the finish? What's the rest of the story about the kitchen?
Mike
"How'd you do the drawers?"
I'll attach a picture of one of the drawers.
The front is oak, the sides are maple, and the bottoms are 3/8" AC plywood.
I bought full extension drawer slides rather than having drawers you have to drag out and shove back in.
I've never done dovetails, and don't have a clue how to hand cut them. So the sides are just rabbeted and screwed into the fronts.
"What's the finish?"
When we bought the cabinets for this house, we bought an extra quart of stain just in case we wanted to make anything to match them. Since we hadn't use it, and this cabinet didn't have to match anything else, I just used that.
On top of the stain I put 2 coats of minwax poly, satin finish.
"What's the rest of the story about the kitchen?"
My Dad is well known for starting things and not finishing them. He decided to make new kitchen cabinets for Mom back in 1965. I remember sitting on pieces of plywood to weigh them down while he cut them back when I was really small.
In 1998 - 33 years later - Dad finally relented and let Mom hire a cabinet shop to finish them.
Dad does nice work when he gets it done. But he's such a perfectionist that he hates to do anything. And nothing anyone else does is ever good enough.
I try to compromise when I do stuff. I want to do it well, but also want to get it done. So that's why I said one of the most significant things about it is that it's DONE.
Is that what ya wanted to know ???
I spilled spot remover on my dog.

Nice cabinet! Honking big 'un too!
Looks like ...oak? (I'm thinking...)
Did ya dovetail the drawers? details details - give 'em up!
And as to your comment: "But hopefully this will mean more to Mom since her Son built it for her. "
Well I think there's NO DOUBT about that! ya done good.

It's 7' 5" tall overall. Mom wanted one like she saw in her Brother's house. It was a built-in one like this one. (The back and left side are just rough plywood)
I also stained some oak crown molding to go around the top give it more of a "finished" look.
If you look closely, you'll see a seam one the side. I made it in 2 pieces so it would be easier to get up the stairs and set up.
I have a question for y'all who have some experience building/buying/selling cabinets. What would a cabinet like this one likely go for?

Well pulled my "AARP-wannabee" superspyglasses out and sure 'nuff - saw that seam between the base cab of drawers and the upper cab with doors. Makes a lot of sense given the overall height of that puppy...good planning on your part to design in how ya were gonna get it to its final installation point!
Like the secret compartment too. Thanks for sharing that with the WWW! LOL!

I've got a set of those glasses on order too. They called 'em "progressive lenses" instead of bifocals. Maybe that's just so they can charge more, or it's more PC.
I used one piece of plywood for the entire side, trying to make the seam as invisible as possible. It didn't work bad, but ain't perfect either. The top is bowed a bit more than the bottom, so they don't line up perfectly.
But Mom doesn't care. We hauled it out to the farm and set it up this afternoon. I imagine she's out there now filling it with stuf already.

Its already at its destination? Good, cuz two pieces or not, it looks heavy. And looks to be down in a basement. Seems like there's always a tight corner somewhere in there when you're trying to get big things out.
But looks good, Boss, you going to give us a pic of its final resting place?

"you going to give us a pic of its final resting place?"
Eventually. All we did yesterday was set it in the room it's to be installed in. Several other things have to be done before it's set in place.
I did think to take some "before" pictures a while back so I could post those too.

Way to go dude. Now make sure her floor trusses will hold it up.
Somehow, I had a smaller, med chest kind of thing in mind ... That cab will hold a LOT of medicaine

If that were my mother's...
She'd have her meds in one drawer
her money stuff in another drawer,
and her pistol in an other drawer
with some underwear to hide it all, LOL

Check out the attached pic. I put a removeable section in the cabinet under the bottom drawer. Mom and Dad both have pistols, and I figured that would be a pretty safe place to keep a couple of them.

Looks like you'll be expecting a thousand bucks worth of cookies, eh?I remember building one similar to that several years ago, I bid it at $800. I found out something about bidding on that one.
The materials cost me $600
The week of labor was 'tuition'so - maybe they can put gold in that hideout too.

You're not far off on this one. I think the materials and hardware were close to $500. And a lot of the lumber I already had on hand.
I might enjoy doing more ogf this if I had more/better equipment and knew more about what I was doing. This one was done with only a table saw, router, and jointer. (And a borrowed pocket hold jig)
