Hi All,
I’m still pluggin’ along on this bathroom, and I have to say, all the advice I’ve got from you guys so far has been terrific. So for today’s questions. I have the floor deck and subfloor down, and I framed out the new tub and shower enclosure. I’m going to install 1/2″ cement board next. I’m tiling the shower walls and ceiling and continuing the tile from the back shower wall down and across the wall (around chair rail level) and along the adjoining wall to that (also chair rail level). Should I install cement board on the lower half of these two walls also? and then finish the top half with drywall? Also how do I finish the transition from cement board to drywall? Do I have to end the cement board “exactly” at the height of the tile? I’m putting the tub in tommorow also so I’m going to put up tar paper to the studs before I throw up the cement board. Should I run the tar paper from floor to ceiling before I put in the tub? or just paper it from the tub up after it’s in? And if your not exausted from all my questions yet I have one more. Should I lay the cement board on the floor before I rock the walls or after? Thanks guys, I’ll have more for you tommorow.

Should I install cement board on the lower half of these two walls also? Since the tile is on a wall, and there standes a pretty good chance that it's going to get beat on a bit, I prefer CB as the backer. I always prefer CB as a tile backer, but if the tile is totally decorative...a kitchen backsplash, for instance...drywall could be okay. Still, CB is my fiorst choice. In your situation I'd definitely use CB.
and then finish the top half with drywall? Sounds okay.
Also how do I finish the transition from cement board to drywall? Do I have to end the cement board "exactly" at the height of the tile? It depends on the detail...but typically, the CB/drywall transition will occur below the top course of tile. The top tile course, whatever it may be, will have about a half-inch or so of drywall behind it. Depends on the size of the tile and what you're using as a cap.
I'm putting the tub in tommorow also so I'm going to put up tar paper to the studs before I throw up the cement board. Should I run the tar paper from floor to ceiling before I put in the tub? I'm not positive on this, but doesn't the tar paper slightly lap the lip on the tub?
Should I lay the cement board on the floor before I rock the walls or after? Most times the CB is laid all at once, with the floor CB then covered to protect it from contamination. Since you're doing this yourself, you could lay the floor CB after the walls are done to prevent messing it up with sheetrock dust or dripped thinset. If space is a premium in the bath, just go ahead and lay all the CB up front so you don't trash the walls when installing the floor CB.
