I’m now installing another dozen columns (technically pilasters… though many are overlays on actual structural columns) on the 4th floor of an office building. Next week I’ll do the bases, etc.
Here are some details for the outside corner work. Rather than just have the 1x flat on the wall, I added 7/8″ returns on the pilasters to give them more depth. This makes the pilasters look more “real” with the added depth and cutting the molding returns for the capitals and bases is easier (since they aren’t so small).
The 7/8″ added depth allows some play with 3/4″ nailers on the corners, scribing, and helps with out of square corners, etc.
The base backing is 1x on cleats… just more easily adjusted or modified than solid 2x.

Brian,
Looks really good. As always.
I like the built-up outside corner detail.

Thanks Chuck,Though this thread is redundant (given my prior column threads), I thought of a few of those details that might be interesting.I'll post more this next week.Cheers,Brian
Very nice, Brian.
Keep the pix coming - I don't often post in them, but I really enjoy your photo threads. http://www.quittintime.com/ View Image
Thanks Grant.I've been really busy and have not been posting much myself (not that that is a bad thing these days).Hoppy Ethter!Brian
Still working on this project... base and cap in now (160 pieces... Whew.)
Looks fantastic, Brian.
You know what kills me, though? All that great work and a foot above it is a dropped ceiling. http://www.quittintime.com/ View Image
Nice work. Looking at that lind of stuff is always a feast for the eye.
Probably not your doing at all but in the "main hall" photo, why wasn't there some kind of "beam" woodwork spanning the pilasters? My eye begs to have something sitting on your finely crafted top cornice pieces which now support nothing but air.
But your craftsmanships great. Thanks for the photos!

There will be a "beam detail" of sorts... later in the week... so I'll post that too. Hopefully that will visually tie it all together. Thanks,Bass
Now thats some clean mitering , real sweet work.
Thanks, I appreciate your compliments. I took that close-up because I thought it looked cool.
