I’m installing prefinished 3/4″ T&G maple flooring over a subfloor primarily of T&G 3/4″ pine, joing a small area of 3/4″ plywood subloor in an added hallway and closet.
The direction in which I want to lay the flooring (which would look best given the shape of the room) is parallel to the T&G subfloor boards (which are of course perpendicular to the joists). I assume it is not a problem to lay both layers of flooring parallel to each other. Am I correct?
There are a few areas which need to be leveled and feathered at the junctions of the T&G and plywood subloors. The depth difference is not great, 1/8″ max. I’m wondering if Bondo would be a suitable material, as it takes nails well. But is there something better? All the floor leveling compounds I’m aware of are for use under linoleum or vinyl, and are cement/latex based. I’m not sure if nailing through that stuff would work properly, or if the material would crack where penetrated and come apart over time.
Finally, how do people recommend fastening the first few and last few courses of prefinished T&G flooring? Is simply face nailing and living with the holes the best choice? Or does one face nail, fill the holes, and touch up the finish? Or is there a better way I’m not aware of?
