You guys noticed there’s lots of weird tools being marketed on TV lately?
Here in Canuckleland, Canadian Tire and Home Hardware win top prize for selling tools that are looking for a problem. Canadian Tire’s “Ready Ratchet” is a good example. Home Hardware has a power tool, battery operated, that saws, dremels, routers, roto-zips and what not. You get a motor with lots of finicky attachments. Yeah, for sure it’s a real time saver and performer. Pretty soon, they’ll put lazers on drills and hammers.
Any weird tools being marketed for X-Mas in your neck of the woods?

The adapta-socket wrench, has a bunch of sliding steel pins in a large socket, supposedly adapts to any size nut/bolt, even ones that are stripped.
The emergency car battery booster, uses a couple of AA battery cells, plugs into the cigarette lighter socket to help start the car.

The one I LIKE is that folding ladder whos name I forget but we've discussed it here over and over.
Funny thing is I've actually watched that infomercial more than once...wonder if I'd ever spend $400 or whatever dollars on it...maybe I should look on E-bay
Be sick

That's a bad sign when you'll sit there through repeat 20 minute showings. PRobably means you're thinking about it, and all you'd need is one little freebee to push you over the edge. And the REALLY sad thing is... I know which one you mean. Little Giant ladder. They've got the Hometime folks on their infomercial. I would have bought it months ago if it wasn't for the $400 price tag. I just have this strange feeling that someone will send me a hat with "stupid" on it if I pay $400 for an Al ladder. And they have models that go for a LOT more than $400!
Someone in the 'what tool did you buy today' thread bought one a couple weeks ago. I'm gonna give him a couple more weeks and ask how he likes it.

Well in that case I guess I've dodged another bullet. I might have been in danger if some website had it with all the freebies. :)
And I think you were the one who mentioned Little Giant last in the new tool thread. Ain't you got that thang yet? That was like two weeks ago, wasn't it?

ha ha, a watched pot doesn't boil! Bet you've been ready to see it on your doorstep for the last week. At least with FedEx you can get a tracking number and see as it makes its journey across country.
Then again... It would have been MUCH quicker if you'd just had IMERC pick it up on his way through ;)

Got my first Little Giant about 7 years ago - got it wholesale through a place I was working at the time - think it was about $280 - $300 - it has been a great ladder - appreciate the purchase every time I use it.
Bought the smaller - 3' to 5' step, I think, at a tool show a few years back think that ran me about $220
they have both been worth what I paid
And yes, now that the patent has run out there are a lot of knock off brands - Werner's looks pretty nice as does the Gorrilla's at Home Depot - the Gorrillas seem to be a duplicate copy of the Giants for $100 for the small one and $200 for the larger.
Try a telescoping ladder like this and I bet it will become your most used ladder - least for this remodeller it is - nice and compact - fits in van - does everything I need it too.

In one of the threads, someone said they didn't like using their LG for extension ladder roles. How do you feel about it in the extension ladder mode?jt8
I like mine in extension for certain things - the flaired base makes it exceptionally rigid and stable and it is ideal for heights up to around 14 feet.
What I don't like is that the angle braces stick out onto one of the highest treads, so if you find yourself on that tread, way up high, the braces can seriously get in the way when you really don't need things getting in the way.
I'd say it's a hard ladder to beat for moderate heights but don't try to replace your 20 foot plus extension with one.
I rarely have to use it as an extension ladder - the few times I have I had no problem with it - as someone else mentioned - the flared legs make it very stable
To be honest, most of the time I use it as an A frame ladder. Like that there is no cross bar to get in the way if you need to stradle something. I usually set the height so that I can staddle the top of the ladder with a leg on each side.
very rarely use it for scaffolding. Use the ability to set the legs at different heights on stairs quite a bit.
Have a work platform and should really get another one - very handy to have as a work shelf - could use the other one for a comfortable standing area
The short one is great for working in tight areas like kitchens and baths - can work off both sides
Go get yourself one - you will use it !
Zebechia Patel,Just saw that infomercial this weekend..LOLfunny thing is I HAVE one, not quite the same, but similar. Believe it or not, it is a damn good ladder.I get tired of strapping an ext. ladder to the roof of the van..this one just folds up. had a buddy @ 380 lbs. He was a girl when he had to use that thing..all shakey and shid..too funny.Be biblical..

You've got to be kidding - The Little Giant is awesome! I've got the Costco version and it is the most stable, versital, and frequently used ladder I own, and I own a bunch of ladders.
My favorite application is separated into two small ladders with a scaffold plank between them. You can climb up either side, over the top and back down again. Nothing like it on stairs...
Awe, never mind. I'll end the sales pitch seeing as how I'm all out of freebies. If you ever get a chance to check one out in person, give it a look. Don't drop $400 bucks on one though. I think my knockoff was about $130 at Sam's Club.
You're spending to much time in that t.p. or what?
it's a little giant ladder, and go to Cosco and buy the werner version for 100 bucks...
handy as hell for stairs and such
I see dozens of them on Ebay for $100 less or so than on the Little Giant website. You think the cosco version is as heavy duty.
Several I see on Ebay are the 300# 26 footers with ladder platform accessory.
Be well

With how much for s/h? I think the Giant folks have free shipping deals now and then.
I think a REALLY good price or a bunch of freebies will push me over the edge and I'd get one.

I think I'm gonna need an infomercial super-special or a building show special.jt8
Bought a set of those "Metwrench" socket/wrenches 10 something years ago.Fit metric/ standard bolts. Good stuff. Also bought one of those steering wheel/brake pedal lock things, supposed to be bulletproof.I guess it works as my truck is still here. Anyone try those 'miracle oil'products like Duralube? Used to be tons of infomercials on those.I DIDN'T DO IT...THE BUCK DOES NOT STOP HERE.
andy,
I don't know what the weight rating is for the Werner version. It's been sturdy enough for me anyway. and for 100 bucks, you can't beat it for a 2 sided step that's adjustable for stairs.
I've only used one of those "Little Giant" types once and it belonged to the HO and it provided a method of scaffolding over some precious shrubbery during a window replacement. Worked great!
When I built a Geo-dome a couple of years ago, the roofer (a dome specialist) had several of them and used them to access the varying pitches of the dome "roof."
But, since I mostly build traditional custom homes, I've not been tempted to spend a lot of money for something I would use rarely....extension ladders, ladder-jacks, pump jacks, scaffolding and rented boom lifts usually fill the bill.
