My girlfriend and I are moving to Portland in a few weeks. I have 5 years of experience running my own carpentry business, and 8 years of working for builders during school breaks. Have my own truck and all the tools (almost), a degree in architectural engineering, and have run residential remodeling jobs for contractors of up to $500K. I am looking to work for a good builder–I am pretty easy to get along with, but a stickler for quality. I know my trade but I’m always looking to learn something new. I’ve read Tim Faller’s book on the Lead Carpenter system and had discussions with him on the JLC forum, and think I would make an excellent lead carpenter for an organized builder or remodeler.
We are excited about moving back to our home state. I have been in Boston since 1992, except for a summer working in Seattle and 1-1/2 years working on Nantucket. I would expect to have to prove myself as part of the crew or as a subcontractor, but ideally would like to find a company with a team of talented people to work with on a long-term basis.
Please respond here, by email, or phone at 617-308-5269. Thank you.
Mike

*Mike,I cant find it but some one asked this same question last fall. I thought you even posted a response. maybe not.Look up Woodward Thompsen down near the Old port.Upscale clients, fine carpentry, awesome shop, lots of talented guys.Good luck T
*T, Dan Morrison moved to Portland last summer, we've been in touch via email and I'll talk to him (hopefully) soon. I'm just trying to cover as many options as I can to find the best company I can....Thanks for the lead on Woodward Thompson, I'll look them up! How do you know them (if I may ask)?Mike
*Mike I worked for them on a remodel of the federal court house. Ask them about the job, over 1,000,000$ of woodwork!Mr T (Tony Ferrito)
*Tony! Now I remember. You did tell me about them. This time I'll write it down. Thanks for the reminder....
*What is the latest with your search????
*Dale, I have several leads and an interview on Wednesday. I emailed out some resumes to companies advertising in DownEast magazine but haven't heard back from any. Have been putting most of my energy into the job I'm finishing up, so I can get to Maine already....Where are you located? East coast I assume ; )
*I'm 20 Minutes south of where you'll be movin.
*Kennebunk area? That's where my interview is. Are you a carpenter?
*Saco, And yes when I can get that kinda work I'm a carpenter. A few guys I know say they wish they had more help. I don't know what they would pay but I wouldn't hold my breath for a really good pay from them. Kennebunk/Kennebunkport as I'm sure you know is a high end area. I can only assume the pay would be better there than in most areas. I've also heard the Falmouth area is still going strong, and like Kenn. is a high end area. It may be worth a drive through the area and scope out projects. I'm really new at this whole thing and most of what I know is all by word of mouth.
*Mike, How did the interview go.......
*Dale, the interview went well...nice guy, awesome cabinet shop and sounds like no shortage of work. Needs help in shop, office, and maybe in the field. Lots of opportunities to learn from his experience and I think I could be of use to him. He's not the super-organized/systematized business I think I am looking for, but it may be a good situation anyway. Pay is average to good for the area, which means low but liveable. He doesn't mind employees using the shop for side projects to make extra income. We talked for two hours and got pretty good vibes from the conversation. All in all a good first interview. Thanks for asking.Mike
*Good for you! Sounds like a good option. I'll bet with spring right around the corner everyone will be balz to the walls with work. Keep that in mind if this doesn't pan out.
