Hello,
I recently bought a new home, and I am in a bit of a dilemma.
The previous owners wanted one of the walls to be ‘rustic’. They took down the paint, felt and plaster/mortar. They tjought that it was a bit too bare and plastered a bit of mortar back on it.
I’ve included a picture of section of the finished wall.
Well the wife and I aren’t too thrilled about the result, and we want the wall to look like the other walls of the home.
We have two options. We can hire a mason to plaster it and a painter to put felt on it and paint it. Or we can hire someone to put plasterboards on it and work to give it a finish that makes it look like all the other walls.
the thing is that the second option is half the price of the first option, and we simply don’t know anything about the subject to make a decision on what method to go with.
I would love some advice about the finished results of both methods and how I would go about choosing one over the other.
Thanks in advance!

Depends on how picky you are and how cheap you are (or the opposite of each)
Is the other side of the brick wall on the outdoors? If so, you would be well served to install insulation as part of this update, and would then want drywall over it.
this option would move the wall closer to the inside of the house, and reduce the size of the room by 5 or 6 inches. would be less if this wall is now inside the house on both sides.
Do you want to preserve the inset shelf as part of this project?
Why do you think there is felt under the paint?
Hello,
Thank you for your swift reply!
Maybe felt is not the correct word; English is not my first language and I’m really not much of a handyman.
One side of the wall is facing the livingroom and the other side is facing the kitchen.
We do not want to preserve the inset shelf.
The wife and I are both students so we don’t have a huge budget, so I think we’re mostly asking if it would make sense to go with the cheaper solution.
I would go with the second option.
Good luck with your studies.
Thank you for your time and advice!
If you just bought the house and especially if you're students and don't have money, give it 6 months. Then if you for sure still hate it and don't get used to it then fix it. Chance are you'll need that money for repairs that aren't cosmetic.
