Need some help from the PC gurus here on my wife’s computer.
When you open My Documents and highlight a file, then hit delete, it just goes and makes another copy of that file, so you can end up with Copy(2) XXXX and Copy ( 3) XXXX etc.
I have never seen this show up in any other computer running Windows. With her’s it frist showed up when trying to deal with photo files and every time she handled a file, it made a copy of it. Found up to something like 56 copies of the same file for some….So I thought it was the photo program she was using that had a bug in it. Now it is duplicating anything in my docs!
So I ahve to assume this is something in the system settings. True? anyone know how to fix it.
Seems like a regcleaner or scandisc could get rid of the duplicate copies, but how to erase the original?

OK,if I right click and chose delete it works for one of them at a time. Using the delete key on the keyboard was screwing things up.but if I use Cntrl key and highlite several at a time, then right click, it will make another copy as it is deleting them.

BTW, all, this is an XP media version with updates. That last got me to thinking it could be a malfunction of keyboard, since I can delte them clean with the mouse functions, but when involveing the keyboard the problem happens. So I did a troubleshoot on the keyboard and did a search for newest driver for that device. It diod go get another driver, but now wants to restart the PC, and she is in the middle of somethig too important to pause right now....so I am keeping my fingers crossed. 'cause when Mama ain't happy....

I do have one or two from old PCs. That was next in my thinking if this driver update doesn't do it.But for the time being all I can do is wait. She'd rather b!tch about it not right than let me sit down until it is fixed.you KNOW it's my fault! Don't you?;)

Hi Piffin,
By chance are you running Norton "360"....I saw and almost identical issue a few months back and had to turn off some backup delete safety option.
Also....is this new or have you restarted the computer since having this problem....just have to ask cause most new things fix themselves with a restart or even a full power down, unplug power cable, wait two minutes and start back up.

Norton is a four letter word around here. I won't let that animal near my computers. AVG for me.I sing that old litany to her all the time..."Did you try to restart it? 97% of everything that can go wrong with a computer can be fixed by just restarting it!"You'd think she'd learn the chorus at least by now.But that's not it. I leave my machine on most of the time, and she is one who will turn it off anytime she is leaving the house or going to bed.Anyways, it looks like a keyboard issue.

Hi Piffin,

I like AVG, put it on all the systems I donate to needy kids and the like.
Norton 360 is an embarassment......95% plus of all our commercial systems go out with Symantec Endpoint Protection.....completely different product but still from the same corp that puts out the other garbage....it's tough knowing you're using a product with that close of a relationship.
Do you have a second computer?......I have on a number of occasions taken a misbehaiving keyboard that still misbehaved even after a full power down and disconnect, then hooked it to another where it worked properly, then returned it to the other system and all was once again well. Strange but successful.
Also if it's a USB KB, unplug all other USB devices and plug it into another port.....boot the system and see how it reacts.

Yeah, I have my laptop and this machine I am on. Her's is different one yet. Then there is the old...Got one that was originally a '97 that I upgraded to 200 and gave to daughter. I think it is out in the garden shed after finding its way home again. And the original; prepentium that ran on whatever system MS had before 97.. was there a win95? up in the attic...cozying up to its 12" CRT screenI'll try a swap around just for giggles. Funny how some of that stuff happens. Like making the girlfriend jealous by talking to another gal to get her attention span tuned up again.

Now yer tryin hard to get me in trouble.so I rounded up all the old keyboards. The one I had put her on had a stuck enter key on one side, so I knew I would hear about that.So the one on there now is what came on this PC originally that I only used a couple weeks. It seems OK all around, but I couldn't find anything else to delete. I did try highlighting several things to right click copy, then re-deleted the copies.I didn't try my oldest keyboard - a lot of the lettering is worn off it.

Probably from too many posts in BT.
LOL, you probably wore out the delete key trying to take care of Bob's posts ;)If you need a keyboard, I think I have an extra floating around here.'Man who say it cannot be done should not interrupt man doing it' ~ Chinese proverb

Thanks, but that one plugged in now ought to make her happy.

I always move/rename/delete files in Windows Explorer. You can highlight a file or folder, hit the Delete key, and it deletes it (on my system there is a confirmation dialog box and you have to say "Yes").
Yeah, that's what I was doing and using windows explorer to view my docs.. And normally you can delete a bunch of them all at once by highlighting while holding ht e control key down. This is all my fault you know...LOL

Photo editing software often forces an automatic save (and here it saves a new copy, so as not to overwrite the original file) on any file it sees as being changed/edited.
First things I'd try are:
Make sure the photo editor is closed
See if a shift-delete works

Not using the photo editor today at all.I have now restarted it and the same problem..So I switched to a spare keyboard - it seems to work fine, so I guess this has been a glitch in it all along.Didn't know about shift delete. Why is that diff from just plain old delete?

Shift delete skips the trip to the recycle bin. You'll still have the chance to confirm the delete but after that, you won't find it in the recycle bin.
I use it a lot.
