multi-function oscillating tools on TIC
Loved the tool review on oscillating multi-function tools in This Is Carpentry new edition. I have never owned one, but seeing the videos, I am much more inclined to purchase one now. I haven’t read the entire article, but I played all the videos!
Congrats to Katz, he is putting the fun back in learning!

Did you watch the video with Katz and the Bosch angle finder? That was great! Someone get him an agent and a movie deal!!
A Multimaster is on the list for sure! Gary, Roe, David & Tristan and everyone else associated with the publication re doing a fantastic job!
He makes things look so easy.
Just to stir the pot a little, HF has ANOTHER multi tool coming, and it's LiIon - basicly a simpler bosch... batteries even look similar.

Hitachi Freight? It's definitely got the sneaker thing going on.

Yeah, no kidding. I'd love to drop $50 for another blue tool on my wall.

Have some of their sanders on the boat, where I am not going to spend for professional tools. The boat does get my old ones when I upgrade. The ToolBear

I always thought those things were a little too silly to justify the expense...
until I needed one. I bought the fein multimaster, the big kit. set me back 4 bills.
I love it. I find another use for it every day
The only reason I still haven't bought one is because every time I have a need what the MM will do for me ...I pull out my rotozip and it seems to always get the job done.
Yesterday was a good example. I was putting casings up so the base moldings needed to be shortened around a dozen doors being the trim was wider then the originals. Put a $3 bit in it and cut them all 1-2-3....then the home owner started freaking out cause two metal bed frame stands he just bought had the frame ends jutting out about 3" past the bed...a real ankle/shin bruiser waiting to happen. I switched attachments on my rotozip....popping on the grinder and sliced four steel ends off for him in about two minutes flat.
So far so good...but I do keep the spare few hundred bucks stashed away waiting for the day I need the MM : )~

Andy-Promise me you won't buy the HF one.
Never Ken....I'm not into faux tools...closest I've come is buying a Sears Shop Vac instead of the Fein and ended up kicking myself for doing it...grrrrrrr.
I think if I ever have an extra $400+ to spend again in this lifetime for a tool I'd get the Fein Vac

you get a slimmer kerf with the MM. and not much dust to speak of. cant do that with a roto-zip
recently I had to cut the legs of some windsor casings and install plinth blocks. I used to do that with a hand saw. an easy task with the MM. so easy I let my helper do it
yeh...I know..but so far I haven't had a real need to shell out hundreds of dollars on the tool and the same on blades. I'd need a job where I'd be using it almost exclusivly for me to break down and spend the dough...maybe like regrouting or window glazing removal and the like but for these small tasks...the tools I have so far have gotten me through just Fein...i mean fine...lol

yeah, I hear ya. I was a hold out for a long time. finally I bit the bullet and went for it.
no regrets. and the big kit comes with a large assortment of tools
It's still on my list...probably the tool thats been on my list the longest....along with the Fein Vac...both of which I check on Ebay from time to time but it seems everyone knows so...so you never find a deal.
I do have to say though...when I bought my Rotozip kit I never expected to use it as much as I do...the whole kit with the grinder attachement with blades n bits was under a bean.
I think the cost of blades for the MM has been more of the reason I haven't bought it then the tool itself. Makes me cringe every time I break an expensive bit...like two diamond bits I used for some tile work in my RZ last week...and those were only ten bucks. and yeh...I know, I know....this guy and that guy has MM blades cheaper on Ebay but still....some things just give me a kinda brain-lock for some reason.

friend of mine told me his brother cuts up cheap hand saws and makes his own blades for the MM. I havent tried that yet
Yeh...I heard lots of people do that but I think the thinner handsaw blades work best like the Jap pullsaw type blades....yeh sure...just what I have time for...buy tools to make tools for tools...sheeshhh...lol

Here is a way to try out the saw for less that big dollars. Buy the one from HF, it is on sale for 39 or 49, then buy their cheap blades. Then if you find it useful and don't want to be caught dead using something with chicago electric stamped on it, buy the fein!
I bought the HF and if I was full time in the trades again, I would be springing for the Fein!

well if I had the money to spend I'd spring for the grinder Joe Hennesey is selling to make blades for my Williams and Hussey molder/planer but things are too tight for me right now so I'll just have to bite my tongue...hard.

I have never seen one of these tools in action in the years that I have been in the field. Maybe the day I do see one might be the day I decide to buy one, but until then, I just don't get it.
The main ding they had against the HF version of the tool is that it only has one speed, 11,000 OPS, which was the top speed on the Fein. They thought this would prematurely wear out blades and the tool.
But this doesn't happen if you pick up the magic accessory on the same tool shelf about 3 feet away: The Router Speed Adjuster for $19.99. Now I have near infinite speed contol - and it clips to your belt too!
So for a total of $60 I have all the features, maybe more, of all the other tools. WHOHOO!
