We recently purchased a home that was built in 1978. We had planned on doing the typical updating, and replacing some doors and windows, and that has gone according to schedule.
Our problem is humming pipes. At first when we heard it, I thought it was a low flying airplane, but it persisted. The pitch and intensity changes when we turn on a faucet, from hardly not at all to hardly noticeable, to very loud.
What can we do?

Jeff;
Try rebuilding all your faucets & shutoffs. The washers erode over the years and do not fully control the flow & may even flutter, thus the sonics (singing). Your house is due for major maintenance of this nature. You should also check aerators & spouts & shower heads for partial obstructions. The next chore is to replace the flapper valve in your toilets.
Good luck;
JE
