I want to build loft beds for my fiance’s two sons, ages 8 and 12. I tried using the Sketchup 5 free trial once before Google bought them, but really couldn’t get the hang of it at all.
This time, I downloaded version 6, watched a set of 4 introductory how-to videos, and just kept at it. I have a really hard time with the orbiting tool at times; it behaves strangely when you get outside of certain limited directions of rotation, and if you start with drawing something like a fairly long 2×4, it whips around in a very confusing manner. But I decided to try the “cut-away” method with a 78″x42″x72″h block to start with, and that helped a lot. I also only just now discovered the “walk” tool which greatly facilitates un-zooming in an intuitive manner.
Anyway, I’ll post screenshots here in a sec. It is a fun application once you start to get the hang of it.

Nice work Rebeccah!
I had to pull the old sketchup out to do some projects and found that I was a lot better at it than I thought. I applied some of the principles that I learned with Chief Architect and that got me over some big humps.
I'd love to share the models with y'all but then I'd have to poke all yer eyes out and sew your lips together LOL!

Rebeccah, great job on your first SU model!
As an exercise for a friend, I did a I bunkbed model and posted it to the 3D Warehouse. Take a look and see for yourself, buy downloading it. I used the screen name "Gene the Cadkey Guy".
It may be more detailed than you like, but it might give you some ideas.
