My first steps

Casper | Posted in Photo Gallery on November 21, 2005 03:31am

Some pictures of the steps I just finished. I’m not really a finish carp. I would normally have cut the Timberframe but the opportunity presented itself. I took the job (finish carpentry on the entire house) as a side job. Lots of nights and weekends. Finally done.

      Thanks Stan,

I owe you for the swoop detail on the treads.

Fabulous lookin work!!  What kind of wood?  I can see and appreciate all the detail you have put into that!!   Excellent job!  I know the feeling of nights and weekends, as do many others.  I am a poster child for taking off more than I can handle!!  Looks like you have handled it well.

I get paid to do carpentry.  That makes me a professional.

If I work on my own house does that make me a DIY?

Youre a finish carp now!Awesome work!
    Be well done

Nice and tight, painstaking miters, I can see you put alot of yourself into this. That herringbone thing on the landings and hutch is pretty funky, I like it.

Nice to have some extras coming in before Xmas, hope you got paid what its worth.

    Beautiful work. Keep em coming

I am a finish carpenter, and I would be proud of a job like that.

Nice work. You gonna quit your day job?

    1. Casper | Nov 21, 2005 06:35am | #7

      Thanks for the encouragement

The wood is Brazilian Cherry. It turned out to be a real pain to work but it sure makes you look good when its finished

As for getting paid for what its worth. I did make some extra money but I took the job after living here (Nantucket) for a short while and now have a much better idea of what I can charge in the future. This place is crazy. For example, this $2 mil house belongs to a mechanic that works for my regular employer. I'm his "personal carpenter." Never heard of such a thing until I became one. Definitely not gonna quit the day job.

Couple more pictures of some other spaces.

    Beautiful!

    Question and comment...

question- is there concern about alignment as the timger frame members season and shrink?

comment: didgital camera pics often seem to swallow shadow detail which can be brought out in most image editing apps:

Eg. the attached has some gamma correction and shot of conteact to spice things up from the rist pic.

      Wow,very nice work.Like the herringbone patterns.Very tight,ouch.
On another note, what type of mechanic is your client? Work over there is verry, verry nice to him.
Very nice work thanks for the pics. george c.

        cawfy-

He is the heavy equipment mechanic for our common employer. He is the largest excavation, concrete supplier, and house moving outfit on the island. It also doesn't hurt to marry an "islander." I've got to hand it to him though. He regularly pulls 80 hour weeks and did all the plumbing and a good portion of the elec. himself, not to mention all the work on the radiant heat and form work for the structural slab on the main level. Still, all in all for a comming over from Scotland to work the cranberry bogs 10 years ago the island has been very good to him.
