Well, a weekend, two boxes of 80 and 120 on the Festool ES125 and sore neck and shoulders later and the ceiling is halfway there! Man this is a pain! All 12″ T&G redwood ceiling, room is 24×20 and it will look gorgeous when done.
(I started with the Rotex 150, 15 minutes later I switched to the 125, Too Freakin heavy!)
Anybody got thoughts on finish?? I got a thread on the knot about it also and looking for ideas, low lustre so wavy sanding on redwood doesn’t show too many flaws and easy application, I’m thinking shellac, sparvarnish or poly satin?
I got a lot to do in ths room, also a 8 panel bifold glass panel door coming from Australia for the front wall out to the lanai for a clear opening of 22’6″ with awesome view.
Any input on ideas for finish would be appreciated.
BTW, the entire house is old growth redwood mostly single wall ( don’t need much insulation here, he,he,he) ! ! !

Oops! forgot to post the pictures...
Not done yet, stil gotta set some nails fill holes and scrape/sand the v grooves, fun.
It had a whitewash or pickling stain? on it previously and was looking horrid.
I got some opinoins tha it was elmersglue and water, or premixed wash, I got about a dozen guesses as to what it was and tried to use different strippers and cleaners on some tet pieces of shelves and some discolored and some effective but costly for such a large area not to mention upside down!!!
So sanding was the best option and the festool sander and vac made it tolerable.

Test your finish choices on some scrap pieces. My concern on a water based poly that it will still draw out some of the tannin in the redwood. Actually that is a concern regarding of the finishing choices.
I used a water based poly on a knotty pine ceiling I installed a few years ago and thought it was great.
PD,
Thanks for the words on Poly. I have several shelves from the built in that I ran though the Planer and man are the beautiful!Have and will do more testing on finishes.
Have done about a dozen finishes including Poly(brush&wipe), BLO, Tung, Danish, Three,
different shellacs, Spar varnish, and a bunch of others to compare.
Still looking for other methods as well that will work.
I'd use a white wash or pickling stain, something about the color of lemon Jello.
You can make some from Elmers glue and water. I did it once before on a v groove redwood ceiling when we lived in Hawaii.

LOL !
I just got through removing the mottled whitewash, some areas were discolored from candle soot and slight dicoloration in one corner when it rained while reroofing, but sanded out fine.
Trying to keep the look of redwood with the finish and besides the entire outside has the pickle wash. I have been guestimated that it was glue/water or a premixed stain/wash which seems right for the age of the house. On the windward side of Oahu overlooking K-bay with chinaman's hat right off shore, nice view! This mornings sunrise
Glad you liked my humor. When I was composing the response I was LOL.
Saved the pic! That is definately Desktop material. Thanks.
I would like to hear more about practical life when you live in Hawaii. I only get tourist reports, and have never been myself.
Already installed the Sunrise on Oahu pic as a desktop. Looks fantastic.
here is a hi res version for yaIt is huge so be patient to load!!
I wouldn't even think of putting anything but a clear penetrating oil on that lid. I would put a linseed/tung oil type thing on it, like LandArk.
Going into town today to pick up some different finishes, I'll look for that LandArk that you mentioned also. Thanks
very beautiful ceiling
I'd leave it alone ( no treatment ) and add a few windows said in jest but you may take some of the natural beauty away coating itall those things you mention work and one of the finest over old redwood is a clear shellac but there is no way one could cover a big flat expanse like that - it is curing 4 brush strokes awayas long as it is a dry room ( little humidity ) straight ol linseed oil is a winner if you must cover it
