How old is the original part of that house? Very interesting construction. Will you be doing some historical restoration?
Al Mollitor, Sharon MA
Well, the 'locals' all say...150 to 175 yrs.old..hysterical restoration, not historical...it make more sense to me to have some modern upgrades...like heat that is not a walk in fireplace!
Cool!
What a project!!
What is the old girl framed with?
I see no foundation, is she sitting on stones.
I love it, truly.
Bet she was fine in her day.
I know it will be a lot of work, but do have fun with it and take a ton of pictures. You should print and frame one of those to hang by the front door.
Mostly, white oak and chestnut walls..some sills have already been replaced , sometime in the '40's according to the local 'old lady who knows everything in the county'..it was her grandfathers place once.
Yep, on rock piers..the part in the middle is where the term 'saddle-bag' log cabin comes from..two houses connected by a MASSIVE stone fireplace..sadly (I think) that pile of rocks out front and out back..is what was the fireplace..the guy before me tore it out.."too dirty"..the idgit.
It is a challenge. Now that the ''kitchen'' on the porch is gone I can see better what I have to work with..the inside is Pine 1x14+ T&G with a million layers of wall paper on it. Under the cieling boards is beaded edge beams..3x8.
>>the inside is Pine 1x14+ T&G with a million layers of wall paper on it.<<
Does that wall paper act as a vapor barrier :^)Matt
Does that wall paper act as a vapor barrier :^)
Yup, earliest known TYVEK..I bet it did help SOME...why else keep doing it?..Funny thing is the DW says " hey this was good stuff, they musta had some $"...yeah, honey let's save it.lol.
Have her cut a section of the wall paper off and strip back the suceeding layers for a historic collage of the place to hang on the wall along with old pics and anything of interest you find of the old place.
huh?
What? you been talkin with her?..She DID.
So far found..an old paddle (like a soap making stirrer)
a dead cat
odd hunks of fabric
a .32 S&W
lots of jars of god knows what
a cast iron skillet lid (in the wall)
.36 and .45 ball molds and 20lbs. of balls and lead
parts of the still...way out back.
horse traces, wood horse collars, petrifed leather halters an bridles and saddle parts
and lots of trash.
What part of KY are you in? I've worked on a few cabins similar to what you've got.
Green, been meanin to get up with you..need a copper hood for the island..
We are east of Richmond, Ky. Right near the Army depot (Battle of Richmond Site not far away)..between Berea and Lexington. while work on the house goes on we are living in Lex. The house is also on the border of the Daniel Boone Wilderness Area.
Home of Kit Carson. And Lee Majors (6 Million dollar guy) Or Farrah Faucetts Hubby.
I'll drop ya an email on the hood OK?
Kewl - I know about where you are. Just did a roof not far from you last winter. I've worked on several old cabins covered with claps down around Lancaster and Stanford. I'm in Lexington.
Well, I feel like Tim Taylor and Wilson..Howdy Neighbor!!!
I am on w.6th just off N. Broadway..did you do some work about a month ago on N.Broadway???...a guy has some new copper goin up...just about i/2 way tween 6th and 7th.
Got snow ????..stay off da roof today!
The house is down on Panola Rd. They call it Waco, there..hafta have ya out..Gunner threatened to come out some weekend, have not heard back from him yet. We could have a MINI-Fest..Kentucky style..'cept I don't drink Bourbon (anymore).
Give a hollar, Duane [email protected]
Small world, but I wouldn't want to mow it. Yeah, I was working on that mess on N. Bdwy. Check the attachment and see if it looks familiar. Just did some work last fall on the donkey house on W 6th. Suprised I haven't met you. I'd like to see your project sometime. There's a guy over in Estill Co. that is the log cabin king as far as I know. A true walking encyclopedia.
oops
Hey, don't go startin' ta post pics of those beautiful old charmers like that now and get folks all riled up.
Seen too many of them go the route of demo for parking lots and the like.
Hurts, oh it hurts!
There's a long story with that house. Board of architectural revue saved that one from the butchers.
OOOHHH MAN..Too funny...yup dats the place!!! I can almost see it from here..The other job is two houses down..I can see that one..from my couch. You have not seen me cuz I just got here in Oct..and found the shack right after that..been down there and back to NC moving my shop to the shack..Estill Co. ya say...the shack is about a 1/2 mile from the county line at Panola..gotta jaw with that guy..I 'll be down there for sure Sun. Tomorrow sounds 'iffy'..
I really was wonderin who around me has a brake..I have got to bend an odd pc. for a new roof to old roof intersection..hmmm I bet you got one..
I'll email the cell # next..be cool.
"Gunner threatened to come out some weekend, have not heard back from him yet."
I aint comin near you until that house is done. LOL
One more thing. What is the deal with that big arsed castle thing on Versailles road as you come into Lex from the West? I've always wondered about it but no one has ever given me a real answer. Except that Lee Majors used to own it.Who Dares Wins.
Chicken..gonna have them too. I will ask a guy I know who used to hunt with Lee..they used to hunt together right there at my house!..Um, still a bunch of Quail and Grouse..Any thing out there on versailles road is high dollar, that is fer sure..I will check this weekend..yer still chicken.!..lol
Baack,baack,baack.Who Dares Wins.
Seriously I've got your number in my cell phone. If I get up there with an easy workload one day maybe we can hook up for lunch.Who Dares Wins.
WOW Duane....just caught this thread....yep yer livin' in a war zone just like me. Thank god I'm a bit past that being that winter is right around the corner.
That place is gonna look totally cherry when yer done.
I've gotsta go back and look at the rest of the thread after work today.
Great project bro and be careful those git-tars dont get rained on up in the attic...lol
What color you painting the roof? Hey, I have an idea....paint wood shingles it...lol...no need for the Max gun then.

38?! Goooood Lord, I'd turn the waterbed heater up and not get out of bed until it got over 60. Not sure if expanding foam would do you any good at this point, doesn't it need 50 degrees or more to cure?
Tick, tock, tick, tock...I have ALL the pipeing...well almost
'nuther few degrees and you're gonna have a WHOLE lot more piping to do.
38 degrees would certainly give incentive to finish the woodstove setup/chimney.
Wheeew! Have you hit the 1 year mark on this house yet?jt8
one yr? Nope..had closing on 12/3/03...almost.
Water bed? HAHAHAHAHAH....it'd cave the floor!
actually I have the two upstairs mostly completed BRs covered with Ele. space heaters. The bathrooms and kitchen as well.
When I replumbed, all Cu, I moved the lines to the warmest parts of the house, and brought the HWH up from the unconditioned tall crawlspace...it'd have to get a lot colder for the pipes to blow. I also have drains on everything, and an air connecter to blow out the lines..no worries.

I've had pretty good luck finding 'mutant' clothes at Lands End. And typically their stuff is far superior to the stuff you get at the Tall/Fat/mutant stores.

I haven't tried LJ's, but with pants, they custom hem them. I think their "long" size can hem up to 38" inseam. They also carry high-rise and low-rise pants.

I think I have a new plan of attack. I had toyed with tearing down the addition, and the log stucture and move the log part to the foundation of the addition and then add a single story addition.WRONG..it would never get done. So, now the plan is to remove the floor sys. in the log part ,salvageing the 5'' t&g hickory flooring, trash the creosoted 2x8 white oak joists and pour a slab over 2" exp foam. This will rid me of the crawl space that is not. I can then do a radient floor tube in the slab or on it and replace the hickory floor.I will need to run conduit in the slab to get from the panel to the walls most distant. I will use thinner foam as an expansion joint/form against the sill logs, and be able to lay up rock outside under the sill logs and up against the foam ...no more wind under the floor. The Finish floors do not match up anyway between the new and old, this may be fixable now..I have located the cherry 3x9 for my endgrain flooring in the kitchen and that will worsen the elev. difference, but, now may be a true riser, rather than a trip hazard.Any thoughts about this oh great ones?Rez..that rabbit run w/o plastic sheeeting will go away now. do I get milkbones?

I gotta slab right in the middle of the house and I don't like it - but it is solid...alternative is to dig out, put a foundation under the cabin and make a real crawl space - slab is quick and cleans things up -

cool place ya showed there. I was hoping to keep as much ext. log exposedd as is practicle. Maintainence could sway that idea tho'.I have had the one cutter (the first one listed) and really never had much sucess getting it to be effiecient. Now, the red one looks interesting..I would go for it whether I actually use it or not.Lacking a lathe, or another set up with a router table or table saw ( there are many ways to get there)...I would go with the newer one's you mentioned. At Tiger Mtn. Woodworks, we made hundreds of chairs and beds withhickory rungs and rails. We had a dedicated tenoner made with the 2 sizes we used...5/8" and 1 1/4" ..a semi labor intensive mach. to make, but with the 2 inter changeable heads and a consistant result, we were flying.Try the adjustable one, you can always upgrade to the newer one's as needed.A 34" Hickory huh? That's an old tree. I'd be a bit hesitant myself..watch for widow makers above ya! I hope I won't need any replacement flooring, but ya never know. Be careful.

He could jack the house up, rent a Bobcat and excavate a basement. Dig out a ramp on one side and then just burrow right under the house (I think that method was in the archives here). Just turn the Bobcat-ramp-to-the-basement-excavation into an exterior door to the basement.
Wind up with a basement with 8-9' tall ceilings. Lets see the varmits chew their way through reinforced concrete!
Where are you located, David? Wish the hickory lumber was a little cheaper hereabouts. Got a couple little workshop projects I'd like to use hickory with, just can't afford it.

I suppose I should give the forstner in the drill press a chance...I got quite frustrated doing them with hand tools; long time, inaccurate; to the point that I don't do them...
got several boards on the wagon - 16-18" poplar 4/4 - gonna cut them to rough length and prepare them as panels for my closets project - felled some 12" - 16" basswood a couple days ago, gotta get the woodmizer out and make my specialty pieces for the frames of the closets - wanted to yesterday, but went and partook the 'holiday dinner' at T's Co-op house at Purdue instead - was probably the best, last, day - wet today, rain tomorrow - we'll see - plenty of other to do, but I wanna do it in my order!
oh - your doors are too big for what I'm doing - or I would be tempted...
Jon was 'the' authority - hard to hear of someone like that cut down 'young' - only the good die young, or something like that - his expertise in a major loss to Knots - guess all the rest of us get to argue wood ID on an equal footing now...

I'd do the restoration sin and strip/refinish them... but they sure would make nice pocket doors (buy the heavy duty hardware kit).

There are several restoration folks on that site and lots and lots of helpful folks. Your project would be a fun one to follow there too! It's sort of the "Finehomebuilding" of log homes. Obviously, on a much smaller scale.
We restored a log cabin, but it wasn't nearly so old and sat on a concrete foundation. It was an insane amount of work. I personally really appreciate what you have to do there. Wow!

Great! A lot of the messages are about new construction, but lots of good information in there about finishes, borates, window installation for log home, etc. etc. etc. However, there are certainly several restoration threads and as I mentioned, some restoration contractors who visit. Like here, they are most helpful!

I think that square and coplaner would be the least import expect possible in a kitchen or bath or if you wanted to go real fancy with tile or maybe "inlayed" (contrasting border) wood floor. And even kitchen or bath would only cause minimal problems unless it was then end run of the cabinets or the end of the tub. Those could look bad."Sorry if I sounded off on you..it was a long day. And hot. I agree with you and would like to add the strawbale scaffold rigging to the things I'm not excited about. It's probably exciting to use though.
OK Sphere, I've got a strange question for ya: How do you keep a full head of steam up on your house project?
Granted, there are some critical items that DEMAND your immediate attention, be it keeping a tight roof or sealing rooms well enough to hold heat or leaky plumbing...and such.
But how do you keep non-critical things steadily progressing? For me, your restoration would just be TOOOOOO many inter-connected items to keep track of (can't work on "A" until you do "B" which you couldn't do completely until "C" was done, which was delayed because "D" is dependant on "A"..etc). I'd hit restoration-paralysis and start spinning my tires.
I'd much rather tackle a new build than wrestle with that many restoration issues. My WAG would be that your restoration is probably 3-4 times more work than a new build would be. Maybe I should ask Andy as well, it sounds like he's gone through a similar circumstance, but how do you guys keep marching forward up that steep of a hill?jt8

How do you keep a full head of steam up on your house project?
I'll let Duane answer for himself, but my take is 'it is impossible to keep up a full head of steam...'
your observations about interconnected things shows understanding - - and of course you are working with other people's f-ups, cover-ups, and compromises - - all too often there is no place to start...
and then you are living in the middle of the mess, working hard at how you make a living, maybe kids, etc - - and of course I've never been short of money for the projects....
dunno - I've got a lot off respect for people that take a project and wrestle it into submission - I've got mine to a stand-off - - people may say many things, but they can't say it's not interesting...

Roar!
Doud, you sure sound like a veteran of the reno wars.
sobriety is the root cause of dementia.
Exactly. With a new construction, you can plan 80-90% of it ahead of time. You have an idea of what its going to cost and how long it will take.
With massive-renovation, you start off thinking you're going to reshingle the roof, and it dominoes into foundation work. You can put a 10-20% cushion into the 'plan', but on a house like Sphere's, you'll burn that in no time.
I assume for every 1 item I can see, there are probably 5-10 I don't see...YET. So therefore I have to take the hidden 5-10 into account.
And then, as you said, double the completion time because you're working and living in the same space (and typically don't have room for either). And then you're working full time on the side to pay for your 'hobby'. And did you want a family/social life? Wheew!
Which brings me back to the original quesion: How do they keep up a head of steam?!

But you know, there are bennies involved in doing old houses.
Just last night I was reminded of one when I had to drill a hole for wiring in some old pine and that lovely turpentine type of aroma filled the air even after all those years.
Almost made it worthwhile living in the dirt.

I don't...LOL
I take on a task, and find out that someting must happen first..then do that.
See, I cant put up the siding on the addition till I replace some sheathing, I cant replace the sheathing till I replace the sill and band joist be cause I need to Jack up the joists..which will crack the new sheetrock in the kitchen and bath...but I had to have the kit and bath "liveable" before my wife cut off my toes and crammed them in my nostrils.
I have a master plan of sorts, but it keeps changeing..the front porch will now be two added rooms..one for her studio, and one as an extension to the room that houses the shop.
I will absolutly have the insulation done upstairs and the beginning of the siding this summer.

Adomition, beckons predition to the eyes of the soul...or What?

OK, so the "current" item is jacking and new sill and band? I kinda like reinforced concrete, so I'd be tempted to start pouring a different foundation while it was jacked (DANG! I just added another item to the list! ...and several thousand $$'s). Hmm, but then if I was adding foundation, I'd have to excavate more, so add that. And so on and so on and so on.
Whether as a result of booze, or some unexpected 'repair' cropping up.... It would be dangerous for me to have that dozer parked nearby. :)
You've managed to upgrade the house from "dozer fodder" to "disaster". You bump that from disaster to "needs some work" and I'll send ya a celebratory case of beer! ;)

I've got a 100+ yr. old farm house with numerous DIY improvements.
I find there are a LOT of highs and lows involved with old houses.
I try to build up enough steam to really tackle a project til its done ( or at least until I have to paint something ).
I love old houses, but they can wear ya down if you're not careful.
Shep, there certainly is a difference from renovating a 1940-2000 house to an older one. "usually" the newer ones have fewer surprises.
Some of those old houses become a freaking lifestyle! More parts of the house have exceeded their lifespan. That siding might have been good for 50 years, but its currently at year 75, and the water (or termites) started infiltrating at year 65.
But then the old house might have been built so darn solid, that you can't help but wanna fix it instead of tearing it down. And that's about the time that the lifestyle change occurs :)
But compared to Sphere's, how does your house measure up on the labor-intensive scale? jt8
It's better to light a candle than to curse the darkness. --Chinese proverb
Mine's not even in the same galaxy as Sphere's.I'm too lazy to tackle a project like that while working a regular job.
The original part was sound, with only a little rot at the sills. The floors sag some, but I think that's part of the charm, and I don't care what anyone else says (at least until the day I try to sell this place)
One of the first things I did was an addition that almost doubled the size of the house. I'm up to about 1800 sq.ft. now. I did my best to match the millwork on the new to the old. Fortunately, it was pretty simple trim.
I've redone the electrical, just finished remodeling the spare bath, remodeled the kitchen, including making all the cabinets (cherry raised panel doors), added a 1/2 bath on the first floor.
Of course, its taken me almost 20 years to get this far. And there's still painting to do. That could take another 20 years, the way I feel about painting.
Oh..as to your ? about the plantings..I sell the hot peppers as organic, and also bottle hot sauce.

Finally got some progress on the North side ( addition).
Replaced the sill and termite shield, outerband, and sistered some joists, ( aftrer buying 3 12 ton jacks, and beam materials)
( and removed and replaced the door, added some temp stairs ( cuz the front ones are about to be eaten by a BobCat)...and removed all the fireplace rock from the foundation trench.
I got tired..working full time, and trying this was getting old..so I hired a guy with a BC...
Gary was GOOD..I mean good. He could drive a nail with a bucket tooth.
We found some buried treasure..an old 100' ext cord and a trolling motor!..wonder what it was rigged as?
The patio will be gravel/sand/ flags...
The front is now going to be the shop ..add a 14' x 40' heated slab. I kill more birds this way. The log facade is now interior, and weathering in is not so much of an issue.
The west side ( not shown) is getting furred and insulated, then Hardie lap siding..if I live.

Last week I splurged for two truckloads of '7's' (a crushed gravel mix used for driveways) for the area between the house and barn/shop - what a nice way to tidy up and blend over the series of assaults the area has seen over the years - might consider something like that around your perimeter after you finish sifting - a good morale booster - beats the hell out of mud -
"there's enough for everyone"
I bet the party didn't help much inthat area..LOL
I have 10 tons on order/hold for delivery of the same 3/4" stone with grit. It packs well.
Also came home and saw the DW had 12 bales of straw delivered. I'll fluff it up and seed and straw it, even tho this isn't the best time to plant grass.
The FRONT is what really is surprising, it is almost ready for footers and slab..yee haw.

Saaaaaaaaaay! I see concrete block! Don't tell me they actually put the addition on concrete block?! I wouldn't have expected that from roof-iceburg people :)
That is some nice looking rock. If that is part of the original house, they probably picked it up somewhere nearby.
When I was a kid, it was 2 miles (one way) to the nearest cold soda (bait shop). On those hot days when my bike was out of comission, I'd walk that long, straight stretch. As you're plodding along, if you look ahead of ya it doesn't even seem like you're moving. But if you looked at the ground right in front of your feet you could see the gravel, rocks and grass rushing by. Made it easier to tolerate the long walk. Before I knew it I'd be at the 4-way stop and just 100 yards from the bait shop.
So my advice is just keep your head down and keep plodding along. Along about October look up and see if you're not close to the bait shop. ; )

Yeppers, dats a 7' high celler under there..not dry, but good storage if it is up off the floor. Ya see that 4" block? it made the whole addition 4" too high to mate with the log part.
That and it didn't act as a termite stop as intended, so that is why I jacked it all up and added the copper and PT.

Sphere - I want to tell you that I really admire your efforts. A few weeks ago, I was flipping thru the threads and saw the picture of your "before". I didn't have time to read the story and kept flipping; said to myself, "That's gotta be a joke. Nobody in their right mind would go there." I got back to the site this week, and I've been reading things backwards towards the start. This morning, I was looking at your work for an hour.
I love old houses and really think you're doing great. Actually, I'd kind of gotten lazy and bogged down with my own project - an old Victorian. After I saw what you did, and how long it didn't take, I was embarassed at my own inactivity. I also regained some of my waning enthusiasm. So, you may have indirectly gotten me back on track. It's nice to see somebody whose doing a great job and making headway. Keep it up.

Filthy?..whew, thank god it is vented well<G> and we had some very windy daze..that left side is BEGGIN for an addition..they removed so many of the logs on some other remodel that there aint as much house as I thought..spending this snowy day designing a 'green rm' for the wife's flora and try to mimic the dormer roof style a little..has to be a step down from the main house...to get that roof in and also clear the upper full length log (which HAS to stay) above the door and windows..A lot of head scratchin goin on now.
Also making all the doors and windows myself..once I get her closed up and some heat going. havin a blast.
you do have a pressure washer, don't you? - - I'd hose that sucka down, starting with the rafters all the way to the rocks - it'll take that dozen layers of wall paper right off, brighten up the wood, and get rid of the dust - -
Yes, I have a PW. But, THE floors are way to cool..downstairs, that is..4 and 5 '' hickory, pecan, and whiteoak...can't bring myself to ruin them. I know if try to pull em up, I got problems..old soft cutnails..I like the scrubbed, scratched, look. Even where the doors sagged over the years there is an arc..worn in like a dish..kinda neat.I guess no one had a clue about shaving the bottoms.
I got the wife a new sprayer and hot water /vingar takes it off with some scraping.I am really tryin to ''get in'' in 2 months..some of the work is easier when I live there than driving an hour each way everyday..the addition on the back is almost livable (by my standards, not hers) I am just getting the REAL nasty stuff done on the old part "for now".
That rigid foam idea for upstairs rafters and sloped ceil is coming next, so I can get the sr up. Then re-plumb the whole thing (it all froze..cpvc shattered), then reroute the wiring, and add some new circuts for detectors, and such. then the cobble flooring, kitchen furniture...not cabs. Hutches ,and cupboards. at least the 2 baths are completed.

Not a clue as of yet about who built it..I agree about those dormers..they are pretty old and MAY be from the original structure, The skip sheathing under the metal roof is included inside the dormers..I think it once had a woodshingle roof..we are still investigating If I findout more I will post it..
Thanks,
Makes sense don't it? No water running into sidewalls, valley's to the eaves. Would give those roofers with minimal knowledge of flashing a better go of it. (No offense meant to real roofers). Around here (NW Ohio) you see maybe 1 of those styles, while 100 mi. to the northwest every darn house has that detail. Always wondered maybe the volume of snow influenced it somewhat. Snow pack on dormer sidewalls always seem an accident waiting to happen.Remodeling Contractor just outside the Glass City.

What is strange (to me) is the bottom of the windows in there is ON the upper floor..the top log is cut for the head of thr windows but not clean thru..the pole rafters sit on the log area that would be a 'header'..I had wanted to make my new windows a bit taller and wider..there is width, not height unless I cut out that long log (not sure about that) and headoff the pole rafter to straddle either side of the window..the strapping spans the roof plane..I planned on opening it insde and SR the dormer 'alcove'..but I am leaning (no pun) on insulating and button back up the way it was..and make replacement windows that are the same size..decisions, decisions..the old guys may have had the best Idea...probly snowed more back then..I wish they knew about wide overhangs tho. alot of water went down the wall..and just how do I gutter the center two areas?..between the dormers?
I am going to re-porch there and maybe can make a decent look if I mimic the steep gables..on the left.I have two months to get it livable..whew. Thanks for thinkin about it..lol Duane
I'm jumpin' in here in the middle without having finished the thread, so if I'm repeating somebody else, forgive me...
That type of dormer--or a similar shaped mini-hip roof with no dormer--is called an Ontario Peak. It's typical of southern Ontario farmhouses late 1800s-mid 1900s. Its function was to provide a drip-free passage from the main door out into the world without the necessity of eaves troughs. Typically, no eaves troughs are ever placed between the peaks; rain is let to drip naturally to the ground along the eaves line there. Frequently, a gravel trench is laid right underneath to prevent erosion. This, in fact, was the gutter--but it was on the ground....
The square-log/dovetail corner construction of the house itself is more typical of southwestern and central Quebec than Ontario. In French, we call it Pièce sur pièce or 'Log on Log'. But the Quebec habitants curved their eaves to collect lots of snow, for insulation. Instead of an Ontario Peak, they installed a short, wooden eaves-trough over the path leading from the door out from under the porch roof. This trough had a spout on both ends and no downpipe was used. Ground-gutters were dug and filled with gravel under the rest of the eaves, as in Ontario. In French they were called dalles--which is today the word the older folks use when they talk about eaves troughs. The kids say gouttières. Another anglicism....
The mix for your log caulking is critical. I have never done it myself, so I can't help you with a formula--but I do know that everybody who has tried to replace the old original caulking with modern materials has been sorry, and it didn't take long to happen. Maybe somebody at that Log-home forum will know a good formula.
But it's beautiful, bro...you're gonna have a lovely place there.

Thanks for the explanation on what I recognized is similar roofline/dormer to those in southern ontario. Know any history on it's start? Something from immigrants that settled there at the time?Remodeling Contractor just outside the Glass City.
Quittin' Time
Sorry, but I don't know much history on Ontario architecture; I can just recognize some of the more common elements. I have been in love with the Quebec Habitant style since I first saw it, and have done most of my ancillary reading on that.
In general, though, I think you'll find that most rural design elements are derived from essentially practical necessity: it's annoying to have to dash through a solid curtain of water to get out into the rain, so some way of diverting that was needed. In Ontario the solution was more elaborate, requiring a complete new element incorporated into the roof. In Quebec--which was always the poorer province--the solution was pretty practical and easy to put in. It also didn't change the look of the house as much, which in my mind is a plus since that elegant, curved eaves is so lovely.

Dinosaur, you really keep me on my toes.
Thank you for the info...the story thickens..I am in an area called 'Panola'..which is decidly an Italian influence, with migration southward of French Canadiens maybe some liked the Italian Kentucky town?..The drip line is what is responsible for some of the damage to the lower logs..someone forgot the gravel part is my guess.
As fas as I have traveled in my general area (about a 10 mi. radius, so far) I have seen only ONE other house that has a similar dormer style..and that has only one dormer..I'm gonna check out some more and get some pics.
The chinking ( as you say caulking) is an odd combination of original which is limestone rocks and wood scraps..which is then sealed over with a very lime heavy, chalky mortar. I know when the logs were newer they would have shrunk away from the filling and leaked like a sieve..the newer products are more elastic to strecth a bit with shrinkage..but being that any shinking has already taken place, my latest plan of attack is to find where a structural support may be needed to distribute some of the load from the corners, insert some custom fitted 2" ridgid foam, and re-mortar with a mix of portland cement, sand and sawdust..maybe some lime as well. OR investigate 'perma -chink' in 5 gal. buckets..probly cost more than the house.
It will be a beautiful , challenge..but as my insurance guy said..it's irreplaceable...I agree.
The French Canadians migrating southward through your area would have been the Acadians, from what is now called New Brunswick. They had their own architecture, which I haven't learned too much about yet. Life is just a continuing opportunity to keep learning stuff....
The damage to the bottom logs on 19th century log houses is almost universal. As you surmised, drip splash off the eaves of short-eaved houses sure didn't help things; manufactured gravel not being available in those years, the gutter fill would probably have been 2-3" river stone, which will stop erosion quite nicely, but bounces the water in all directions like crazy. Eventually, somebody figured out that a deep porch roof, called a larmière in French, would get that water farther away from the foundation logs and help preserve things some. It also shaded the ground-floor windows, which was lovely in the summer.
The lime and chalk in your original mortar are very typical, and from what I understand they are the essential elements. The fill between logs could be anything from, as in your case, stones and chips, to straw, or whatever. In tear-outs such as yours, it is not uncommon to find newspapers and rags stuffed in over the years during spot repairs. I have often seen extruded polystyrene board used in rehabs of old log houses; I can't say with certainty what kind of mortar was put over it.Dinosaur

I once repaired a Sashco chinking product on a relocated log structure. Stuff looked fantastic until you got very close. Then mostly the absence of cracks made it look odd. The repair was due to squirrels digging at the product which was backed by 1" beadboard. Had the whole cavity been filled with insulation I don't think the squirrels would have bothered very long. As there was a cavity available, they made a mess. I used xps for the repair for a little more strength, and stuffed the cavity. IIRC, I paid $35/5 gal which goes a loooong way when it only went on maybe 1/8" thick.
Purists around here are horrified by these products. But they don't crack.PAHS Designer/Builder- Bury it!
That's the deal..Extruded foam, and a skim of chink ..also ordering the big foam cannister and wand kit..newest plague of my existance is locating LEAD flashing..can not find it anywhere..where I want to do a PERMANENT job I want lead..let critters try that out. If they do chew it at least they will have Dain-Bramage from it...if ya know of a supplier that ships it let me know..I called every roofing wholesaler in Lexington, no joy. And I hope Greencu will get back to me, I may have to go with copper...aaarrggg.Can't get much work done flushing out materials..I'd rather be puttin something together than shopping.
Thanx for the info..Duane
if ya know of a supplier that ships it let me know
Somebody here bought copper from my supplier and had it shipped. No idea if they have lead flashing, but I'll ask. Actually, I have a good friend here who visits his girlfriend in Richmond every few weeks. Wouldn't be a problem to talk him into a delivery. This is the guy with the standing seam tools I borrow. He'd be very interested in your project. Or did I get your location wrong?
I ended up with a roll of what looks like asphalted copper flashing here. No idea where it came from. People give me lots of stuff. Need any Filon water tubes, mass for a solar application?PAHS Designer/Builder- Bury it!
Ha, you got it..Richmond..Ky , named after Va...used to be a colony way back when..of Va. I am in Madison Co...solar? I messed abit with that in NC, gonna hold off a year or two before I delve into that, maybe for my shop..
Cool beans if ya can find the flashing, I am sending BOB in Ct, some window wrap, and it looks like IMERC is gettin him some SS trim nails..we are a good bunch of guys arent we?..keep at it, time for me to go pick up some metal roof for my ridge work..I am gonna wait on the siding for the extension till I get the flashing sorted out..Thanks Tom...Duane
Ha, you got it..Richmond..Ky , named after Va...used to be a colony way back when..of Va. I am in Madison Co...
Oh, OK. Botetourt county, near Roanoke, Va., used to extend to the Mississippi River. And Madison County is 2 counties N. of here. Richmond... Got a music store there that's been around forever? Go in and say hi to Cathy (owner), ask for a Hamlett mandolin, and watch her mouth drop. Then tell her you've been talking to me. Unless she's one of your old girlfriends... Small world, LMAO.
Found your lead. Shows what I know (not much). It's common stuff. 30"x30" sheets, $23.32 ea at over 20 lbs. Rolls are 3' x 20' at $223.20 and 200 lbs, or 4' x 25' at $496.19 and over 400 lbs. They also have lead coated copper in 3' x 10' sheets, both 16 oz and 20 oz copper.
NBHandy is 800-288-6242 from here. That's Richmond, Va. I think they'll ship. You'd have to bribe John to drive his F250 there, but it might work. Let me know if you want me to ask him. This is too funny for words.

Too funny indeed..NOW everyone has a answer..GREAT. About teh lead..what I found at a supplier in Alabama..is 8'' by 30'..perrfect..BUTthey have not responded after the first email saying "find a wholesaler in your area"..which I could not. I have not yet checked with GreenCu and his reply to my private email.he says he may have the ticket..and he is right here in LEX....I check the music store and Cathy..see what happens. I made a few mandolins myself, and always need supplies like strings and such, so it's a good excuse to find the cool music store..as far as yer buddy, I got nothin to bribe him with<G> His truck has to get better milage than my redneck stretch limo..F350..460/4bbl. I'll be in touch..

Turns out the store name is Currier. Don't forget to ask for a Hamlett mandolin (pic of Chris Thile playing one). I sure hope you don't have the same bribes as Cathy. Also turns out his F250, with a 390 or 391 (whichever isn't for light trucks and came out of an F600 I traded him), has a rear end problem that's waiting for warmer weather.
If your lead source doesn't pan out, let me know. Or hop in that F350 for a road trip! I'm not going that far in my deuce-and-a-half. I like you, but not that much.<g>PAHS Designer/Builder- Bury it!
OK, here's the secret, if you're gonna use a masonary based daubing (officially, at least here, 'chinking' is the rocks/wood/foam that take up the bulk of the space between the logs, 'daubing' is the mud to smooth it over) - - the specific mix is not real important, but the key ingredient is fiber plaster - - doubt if you can get horsehair anymore, but woodfiber is commonly availible - - it'll hold things together and keep the inevitable cracking under control...
I like that, maybe old cow hair?..we got lots of cows around..it will be a thin skim of something just have not decided yet..other things are more pressing..like keeping the water out!..we'll talk, Thanks.
Check your email - my server wasn't working - had to use a different address. Think I got you the info you need. Have fun.
let's try that again..I messed up MINE with Zonealarm..whoops...or If ya got my ph.# from the email just call..I'm with the phone if I am vertical..
I'm getting ready for a birthday dinner and then i'm gonna watch the ballgame. Phone's in the truck turned off. Give Ferguson's plumbing supply a call. They (used to) carry lead sheet for shower pans. I can get some delivered on fri if i order on thurs if that doesn't work out.
we are a good bunch of guys arent we?.
and to think I could have returned the favor.......too late I see

what was that? painted clapboards on the interior?
Down on the floor? that is 3/8" poplar T&G beadboard..on nailers to the logs..far left is the back of the cedar shiplap on the gables..looks like the upper logs were cut out for a loft entrance from out side..still a mystery.
Go Stab yourself Ya Putz! Ya think I Parked here?
what do you have going for floorboards there?
and another...it was starting to get ugly...
Dem floor boards are 7/8" T&G SYP with a 3/8" bead on the under side..visible from the now naked cieling below..some by the window (just off the frame far right) are rotted a way. I found some on the porch roof that I can salvage for patching in..then a new 'knee wall' and rafters.
I re-did an attic last yr. that had a fire in the 40's...sistered all the rafters and collars..hottest day of the year of course..and teh access hole was 15x15 to get mats. up Soot flying every time the gun nailed...and kept losing light bulbs from the vibration. Oh, the memories.

Go Stab yourself Ya Putz! Ya think I Parked here?
Today was a gambel..sposed to be no bad weather for 4 days..ha, we'll see..no better way to prove them wrong then to open a roof. The PO had built the addition on the back of the log part, he chose to leave the damn gable sticking up like an iceberg. Not to good. No flashing and to "top it all" off he managed to shingle the gable before the main roof with all the laps suckin water instead of shedding. So of course it leaked. REALLY leaked. He also used 2x6 rafters (way over spanned) and stuffed 6" insul in and cut off all air @ at the soffit..not too good.
I decided I ought to do something soon..my helper is back from his AWOL time..and we did some surgeory..I hope to get some new rafters beefed in Sat. am. and re-sheath the mess, then Sunday shingle it. It is a temp fix , a meteal roof will replace it all as time allows and the BIGGER problems get whittled down.
The new super chicken coop ridge is on and awaiting flashing and hardie siding, it is visible up top..Gonna try to get some inside pics of this framing tomorrow, man it's spooky. I have already cut out the valley rafters and some how the roof is still up!..havin fun, and being safe..believe it or not.

Whens the sawin commence? I hope I can get up there..if not...4 qtr. and 8 qtr. don't need nothin over 8 or 10 foot.
I guess ya know how to saw for grade right? quater saw with a wood mizer is not worth the hassle useually. Slab it and roll it , slab it and roll it. I 'm bettin the pith channel is straight as an arrow. If ya box it at the end of slabbin to a 4x8 , it gets resawn to a pair of 2x8 thru the pith...but you knew that.
dam shame it's so ugly.

....what did ya do on the part where the logs end...
ya gonna get all my secrets - I held the new wall beyond the log wall plane - and scribed and cut a nailer (screwer?) and attached it to the logs...
...and then made a walnut corner that screws to the scribed nailer and lays on the drywall...
Ok..that's no secret..LOL. I did the exact same thing outside where the addition butts up to the log corner..scribe, cut, scribe, cut cuss...scribe, cut..then foam it in..LOL. Gunna be awhile b4 I do too much inside finishing..just realized I have to un-sheetrock all of the cielings in the upstairs of the addition, and remove all the insulation..it is wet from the roof leaks and is overstuffed with 6" fg. in a 2x6 rafter withno ventilation..so out it comes..then 5" of rigid foam with 1/2" air space and 1" with strappin over dat.. R30 i figgure.
Your trim looks great..I'm getting some 4x8 material for posts where I am terminating cut off log ends like a jambed openings..and then do the same detail for a side casing or a backband..the fun continues..

Got the new carry beam up to support the roof where I cut out the valleys (they were under the new addition roof and just inside headbangers, but still had some load on them) and will hang the flat cieling joists from the beam. Also put up the new rafters so that I can reinsulate and strapp them for the rock..will have 1/2 " air, 1" foil faced duct boaerd (R4.3) 2" pink foam..and 3 more inches foil faced ductboard...it's freee..so I'll have R 27.2 there abouts. that'll do.

I am a 'Lancelot' user from the first year of issue - - I like 'em, but don't use them for long periods at a time, less my grip get weak - they don't kick-back like a chainsaw can, just don't make a mistake.... your situation would seem to be especially dangerous - -
I do remember as a young adult, working with a wire brush on a high speed (big) grinder, laying under a car, working on the undercarriage and getting my t-shirt wound up in the brush - ouch- big raspberry on my belly, hurt like hell for a couple of weeks - - could have been worse tho...
ya, this woodmizer is one thing I kinda covet - - there's not really many 'things' I want, but tools fall under a special catagory, and this is pretty sweet - LT-40 (20' carraige), 24hp, full hydraulic, trailer package, 100 blades, sharpener - 1200 hrs (factory freshened @1000 hrs) - $14K - - it is 12 years old, no laser, new ones have more bells and whistles, but they are out of reach for me, unless I would give up my advocation to pursue sawyering - - a few days a year, it's a lot of fun - wouldn't want to have to face it consistantly - - "there's enough for everyone"
heck, the only blood shed today was when I missed the cold chisel and whacked my hand with the rock hammer..lol.
14K for the saw sounds good enough..but I see your point all too well..methinks the fun will wear off if ya have to saw to payoff the mill..(and charge exhorbitant prices for a bunch of old, dead, smelly, termite ridden, ugly, worthless , gonna be in yer way, eyein up yer daughter, ate your chickens, drank your last beer....brown ash)..
what say we get that outta there?<G>..before ya do something you may regret..??

The wifes doin good, she's gonna be home Saturday finaly. (Gotta clean)
When I left last week I was supposed to start a two day remodel. Well while I was gone they sent a total of six different guys on it over a six day period. They even worked Sunday. It was one of those deals where everything they touched turned into an obstacle. I'm glad I missed the whole deal. I've just been having to go back every night and work on the electric. So I got out pretty good.

Whens the sawin commence?
dunno, I had hoped to be doing it about now, but the ice/snow/ice/snow/ice/snow sandwich that covers everything makes it unreasonable to continue operations in the woods - I've got a dozen logs pulled out and more ready to skid out, but it's just too exciting coming down the hill....we'll get to as conditions permit, hopefully in the next 6 weeks- operations are well back from the road, so it can't be too soggy either...
I'll contact you as soon as I can foresee - - get ya up here the day before and have a party - do you play as well as construct instruments?
here's a current pict out my driveway - ya know, it's really nice out, great temperatures to work in the woods, but just too slick -
amazing the difference just a few hours north..we be all mud here!!!...50 deg. today. I still have my guitars packed up (too small, in this temp. pad) and rusty pickin fingers..might be albe to drag an acoustic along , but doubtful..hands have really been takin a beating.

X-ray room sheathing / liner. Make yur own.
Who ever invented work didn't know how to fish....
You should be able to find a plumbing supplier who has sheet lead. People fabricate shower pans from it.
Ok, today was not too bad..mostly wind. Speakin of wind, this is the beginning of the ridge vent of all time..based on a 'Boston Ridge' it is like a long raised ridge..I had no choice but to set strings, and line levels and try to BLEND it all together as best as I could..there is a 6'' difference in 42' of the junction 'tween old and new..whew.
The new chase for the chimney is going up at the same time and will help by being a break in the line of sight ( a little cheat but , hey whatever works) and will be covererd in rock to look more or less real..
That's me on the chicken ladder, a 10/12 steel roof is not somethin I would walk even in GOOD conditions..I plan to use hardie siding on the face of the ridge..( now that sounds ODD, face of a ridge) and Galvalume roofing..when the main roof gets redone it too will be Galvalume and be vented into the upper part as well.
I hope to get it covered b4 next sno/rain event..we'll see.

That's going to be quite a gem. You think only a year for the major work? Geez, It would take me 20 at least!! (I'm slow and way too anal, but my motto is: Do it right or Don't do it at all) I followed your trail to Paula's link...BTW, nice cabin Paula...and recognized the stairs, but didn't know that you built them. Awesome work and very creative. Hope you got paid well, you deserved it....and for the Waltons?, that's impressive!! You can build me a set if you have time<G>
Now, I won't even doubt what your new place will look like. It really amazes me that guys like you can visualize the end result in those older buildings. I can do that in hot rods and classic cars, but try to 'cherry' a house...that's a true talent. You need deeeep pockets and lots of patience. I can see why you do the clown act, you need it if you want to stay sane! Go easy on the helper... if he's reliable, and a quick learner...you'll need the help to hit that 2 month move in date. Unless Gunner and Imerc are gonna pitch in too, then you can have the BT SpringFest there ;-)
Later and good luck
BTW...keep the pics and comedy commin' {G}
Bob
Bob, Thanx for the encouragement. SANity??? Now where'd ya get that idea? I can attest to the fact that following where someone else left off ( previous owner died at 47 , heart attack) is a lot more difficult than starting from a clean page, and I spend 3 times aslong deciding 'can I make it work the way he started or rip it down and start over?'
By the movin date, we should have all the nice modern stuff working, but the 'final touches' really have yet to be determined..as archy's like to say VIF..verify in field..the whole place is VIF and dictates what course of action the end result will be ..abstract painting..
Well gotta go, back on da roof today, and the insurance co is coming out for yet more pics. Ya ought try to insure a place like this..read more $$$$$$$.
Have a good one , later..Duane
Before the weather went bad again we have the final height of the chimney chase up and one half of the ridge dried in..icy rain today..man that house is crooked, I made the chimney ALMOST plumb..and the ridge is ALMOST level..can't get it too perfect the rest would look to bad..lol
actually lookin' pretty good - - or as everyone says about my projects, 'it'll sure be nice when ya get it done' - - I was having a hard time figuring out what you were doing with the ridge, but I now understand, and it looks good - - I think you are on the right track not to worry too much about plumb and level - - make it pleasing to the eye, and split the difference....
keep up the good work - -
Thanks David, The last guy (who died before he got too far) set the 2/12 rafters ON the 10/12 ridge cap..leaving the ends wide open..and the addition was built alot more level hence the jacked up rafters on the west (left as the pics show) side..to blend it all and vent it with out birds livin in there this ridge will kill two birds at once..metal comin..Sunday.Now the other half.

Well, with two weeks to go b4 the move in, I thought it might be wise to rebuild the lower corner that holds up the house..LOL
I know its a messy site..has to be chaotic or I get lazy..I removed 3 rotted logs that ajoin the new to old..they was really bad..so, I "harvested" some from the upstairs where I am putting a balustrade at the stairwell.
DW is my helper nowadays..BJ up and vanished ( I wonder why?) I have to be honest this was easy..transfer the angles to the new old log and sawzall proud of the line..slick it to fit, and sledg hammer it in..( with out knocking down the supporting wall, of course!)..it was a great excuse to sharpen my hewing tools again..even tho..they did not see too much action.
The pic, called other side has been done enough to add the new buck that the Doud wood will conceal. It will get a total of 2 2x6's and cased in 1 by. This is a 10' passthrough that was a 30" door and a window..
I had to remove a lot of the laundry room wall to get access and it will all be new, the DWV stack was in a chase..the CPVC is now dead with new copper run from in the laundry room instead of the crawl/basement where it always froze in its past life..
We were able to replace these two in about an hour and a half..one more tomorrow then the support buck..then the whole thing gets a temp wall of plastic, to keep the dirty side out of the semi clean side..geez,, two weeks.
The DW has had the shop vacs going enough to spin the meter base..what a trooper..as soon as she cleans up my mess I come along and say.." UH, I wasn't quite done there, Dear.." And out comes the saws..
The carpet is a good work surface, and the new floor for that room is ready to be put in..I decided to use the wide pine panelling..16+" x 5/8..glued and face nailed with cutnails..it will make the transition to the endgrain blocks in the kitchen less severe and there has to be a step down into the old log room, or I may put up a half wall..the designer part of me is away..<G>.

don't think it was split..I'll have to go downstairs and look at some that's left...I burnt all the tear out last nite. Funny they put SR on plaster lath huh?
Rebuilding that corner will be fun..hope the house stays up when I start disassembling it..I think I may put some braces up, like a porch post R&R just to play it safe.
I still need to harvest some more logs from inside the dogtrot, and below the center dormer, where they filled in with non-notched logs..that will be either another door (making 6) or a window..probably a door being as the woodstove is gonna be right in there (for this winter)...

So, I decided MY pond needs some breeding stock, and frogeaters..so I put them in there.
Today, Eddy and I scooped out some algae, and yanked cattails around the shore..later today we will get in the boat, and do some more..

HEY DD...
I got a question for only you..the man.
I took out the corner, actually, it fell out.
Any way, I wuz gonna stack up newly cut old logs, to rebuild it, then I had a brainstorm..mebbe just use a built up post, and frame it.
My concern is the outward thrust, on a pile of logs, NOT really able to stand up to it..these wiould all be less than 3' long.
A new addition (sunroom, plantroom whatever) is going on the wall eith the green tarp..the wall with temporay windows will have either french doors, or windows..that wall is getting either hardie siding or stone,,,where the logs are too shot to deal with, IOW I need to keep cutting back and UP , but I have a winder staircase in my way from inside.
Do you think losing the log corner would make it lokk even more silly? Or worse, be unsound?
lemme know..gonna temp frame more studs an sheathing, to keep the wildlife where it belongs..

My concern is the outward thrust, on a pile of logs, NOT really able to stand up to it..these wiould all be less than 3' long.
if you do a good job of notching the corner it's as good as a post - - I can't see from the picts, what's below the floor and atop the rock? that would be the place something could move - -
so I don't think there is much arguement for post vs log from an engineering standpoint - - a post would be about two days faster however - and estetically that column of short logs doesn't have a lot going for it IMO - by the time you get it trimmed out, very little log would show on the inside, and from the outside, even if you wrapped an addition of some sort around the corner, you have a corner with a bunch of new cuts that you can spend more time trying to disguise - and I don't know any way to simulate 150 years of end grain weathering - -
...that wall is getting either hardie siding or stone,,,where the logs are too shot to deal with, IOW I need to keep cutting back and UP...
ya sure? from here it looks like you are at the point of diminishing returns - can't you hog out the corruption, fill the voids with mortar, fur and cover it up?
Do you think losing the log corner would make it lokk even more silly? Or worse, be unsound?
no reason for it to be unsound, that's a simple design/engineering problem - - silly looking? since you asked, I think it's time to flesh out your design - maybe wrap that corner with living space? - - I don't like additions that hang off one side, better to turn the corner - design that post to make a statement - tree trunk maybe? - - I'll dig in my resources later and see what I can stir up - - "there's enough for everyone"
Ahhh..good points. The sun room will have a roof line to mimic/compliment the dormers ( I thought). Wrapping the new space around the post MAY be an option..BUT
It's the hammer side for weather..all my stuff comes from there..BIG stuff...I have not been here long enough to really get a grasp..but , from what I have seen...it's hammer time there.
I have Ties..RR ties..treated w/ creosote as a main sill...on stone piers, no footing. NO SHID. The corner on West would sit on the tie, the South would have a space ( I am thinking a brick) below it.
DW says a post...I am inclined to agree..( makes life much easier)...
So, tomorrow I;ll just frame on 2' and OSB an paper till the jury decides my fate..
I'd rather see logs...but your input about the new cut ends has much merit...HMMMMMMMMM?

Do you think losing the log corner would make it lokk even more silly? Or worse, be unsound?
Stick a post in there and it'll always be the same height. Stack up the logs and you'll get something else, if it makes any difference to you.

Sphere: I'm kinda late catching up on your thread here...but saw your remark 'bout the depot, and then pic of "old ammo crates" and just gotta say:
You ever run across anything marked: "GB" or "VX" or "H" and you call them Army boys right quick ya hear? AND DON'T TOUCH 'EM! (and keep Eddy's nose outta 'em!)
Make that HC or HD or BZ and he'll never notice..
'specially the BZ.... peobably keep it all to himself...
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming.... WOW!!! What a Ride!
PBA in Ark'n'saw got rid of all the BZ back in the '80's. But them "non-stockpile" folks still find buried items (think Spring Valley near D.C. - the hmmm.. wassit the Korean Ambassador's back yard???)
Nerve agents: VX and GB (and GA) also; GB aka "Sarin"
Mustard agents: H, HD, HT - known carcinogens.
BGAD is one of the 8 stockpile sites for the US cache of chemical weapons; the 9th had been Johnston Atoll out in the Pacific but they finished incinerating all their chemical weapons back in 2001 - now everything tore down out there and covered with a coral cap.
'82... H and B series was still on the shelf and an active "deterent"
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming.... WOW!!! What a Ride!
Is a lot more I could say about that, but best I don't...
Just remember, in '96 the U.S. signed the OPCW (international treaty for the prohibition of chemical weapons) and thereby promised to destroy all our stockpiled items by 2007. Well, everyone knows we aren't going to make that date and OPCW allows a 1-time extension of 5 years - i.e. to 2012. Plus, Russian having HARD time (no real $$$ to deal with all their stuff...) and won't make 2007 either.
I heard...

when will it end? lol..
one of the best threads i ever saw here was started by a lady who asked when a contractors house is finished.
the consensus was about 10 minutes before its sold.
Oh my god, man!
You don't do anything small, do you.
At least its keeping you off the streets.
OK, I realize that:
1. At this late date (8 months into it?) it is too late to make this suggestion
and
2. The renovation gods may very well strike me down for suggesting it
but...
At any time did the 'evil' thought enter your head that you could salvage the good bits, bulldoze the remainder, and start with a fresh slate?
If I was wearing a hat, I would take it off to you. You get this one finished and we should nominate you for the "This Old House" hall of fame.
JT..
not a chance...if I was gonna do that, it would be done by now.
I did insure heavily tho'...in case I might run outta steam..LOL
I really am getting there, ought to have a recycled pair of french doors in this weekend...woodstove and chimney by mid/late sept, all the holes foamed Oct..windows and doors in the mean time.
I am reeeeeaally considering adding a heat pump and C/air...while it's all tore up inside, the duct runs would be a snap.
Just gotta find the mooola..

You have been an inspiration to me any ways. You have also given me lots of encouragement too.
At least you are doing this with some knowledge of the trades. I on the other hand must be even more crazier then you by a long ways. I have almost NO knowledge of the trades. But I am learning. And from what I feel, I am learning from some of the best there is to learn from. That includes you.
I had the pleasant experience one day not long ago of meeting an elderly man who has been doing this sort of work for most of his life. He told me that the first one or two are the hardest ones to do. Those are the ones that you do most of your learning from. They are also the hardest to finance. He said that every house that he has work on he owned it. He also said that every one of them was ready for the bulldozer.
Something else that he told me was that if you live in the house you are working on you will work harder on it. Nothing like getting wet from a leaky roof will inspire you more to get up there and fix it. Or the fear of having the thing fall down around you.
When I asked him what he liked so much about rebuilding an old house he told me that he loved the idea of saving a piece of history and like God, he was saving a soul.
I tip my hat to those who like building new houses. If it were not for them, those of us who like rebuilding houses wouldn't have any thing to do.
DaneI will always be a beginner as I am always learning.

Ok, It has been awhile.
Today was a suprise day. I counted on reshingling the back of the house. I hired our crew that does that daily, these guys are the best.
well, the sheathing was SHOT...I made an emergency call to Lowes ( that had JUST left after dropping off the Ice and water shield and 10 sq of shingles) and begged for 20 sheets of OSB TODAY...they did. wow.
Somehow between Chileo and myself, we miss counted...I needed yet 5 more sheets..at 5oo PM. My F350 was loaded with tearoff, and the trailer too...I cant haul 4x8's in the van ( which is now on 5 cylinders anyway) ....so I find mt neighbors wife and ask if he can drive me up to town...she said he is out cutting hay, take his truck and rock on..so I did.
Whew, we got the whole schmear redone and dried in about a half hour ago...tomorrow, we shingle.
Here is what it was looking like.

Something you've lost me on... you spend 40 hrs a week (or whatever) working on roofs for Cu, but when it comes time to roof your addition, you're hiring it done?!

Most of it is actually shingled as of right now, all new fascia as well.
I am really pizzed that I did something stoopid..I got my siding, and my roofing at the same time as my van started crapping out and my dog got a infection in his foot. I was doing OK financially, then BOOM! I am flat broke and rained out today from the paying work.
My work for Grant has been Carpentry, Copper and wood shakes and gutter...our crew can do tear off and dry in about a hundred times faster than I.
With the added suprise of tearing off ALL the sheathing, I was greatful they could work for me,I could never have done all that alone in the time they did it in.
I do get down about it all, but like you said, we HAVE come a long way..I just hate being overdrawn, over heated, and stressed out about vehicles and suprise bills. It sux.

"The old Quaker Meeting house is almost 300 years old and as my sawzall made its way into the pegged ancient wood, a smell emerged that told me about dried, cracked things. The ancient Quakers sitting in the well worn pocket of their silence on the darkened pine benches were whispering something to me across the years. Something about why I was here, why we're here. Lord but it was hot. I reached in to clear anything out of what was the sill, nothing but the hardened mud, lime and sand mortar, dust and shadows." -- Jer
Funny. The crew never showed Sunday. I went to my job on Monday, DW was out doing her bizness stuff.
I got home and went right inside, plopped at the 'puter and noticed my pump jack brace just hanging outside the window...
Thinking "WTF"? Happened..I looked out the window a bit closer and saw all my fascia ( prepainted, was on the saw horses) was GONE! Yikes! Who would steal that? Then I saw the Drip edge was missing too...
I ran like hell downstairs and outside...and the pallet of shaingles was gone too..then I had a flash of insight...der. I went up the ladder and saw it mostly shingled .
I left home at 700am, wife at 1100 am..so Los Guys musta did a quick hit and run. I am still 3-4 square short on the shingles, but I can finish it my self from here.
So I'll not post a sheet-headed picture, I'll post a shingled picture, soon as I can afford the remainder of the shingles.

Remember the cat vet bill?
Dog has an infected nail bed that cost 100.oo more than that ordeal of 120.00...he got xrays, painpills, antibiotics, and salve. It was pretty ugly and painful for him, we hadda do something.
I THINK the fuel spider in the van is TU, just like the first side I had replaced for 800.00...it ain't happy dumping gas into the top of the cowl and fouling out the plugs..frakin plastic fuel rails suck and blow simultaneously.
If I had saved a bigger cushion, I'd be ok, but I didn't expect the unexpected..I have 40 bucks to my name...in cash. Acct is overdrawn till payday, and I have one day in this week so far..not looking good.

Well I thought I was the only one here on skid row.
I am waiting on 2 checks right now that are way overdue. The bank draw system is this area is killing me.
I came back from my Grand Rapids addition project to find out the power had been shut off 4 days prior over $70, WTF man. It was 2 weeks late. It was 110 degrees in my house and it stunk like sh!t.
Hopefully I see the checks this week. What's wrong with me? I could ask you the exact same thing.
Holy Cow! Misery loves company.
I don't know where my briefcase containing $900 in checks in addition to my checkbook, SScard, passport and copy of birth certificate is at. I'm hoping I forgot it back in NE or it is sitting in the house here somewhere hidden.
Regardless, tomorrow I make all the phonecalls.

Not quite. I dont have the last of the shingles yet..went belly up. Leaks galore last night, but it was a frog strangler kinda storm, treee dameage I have yet to asess.
I start with that in the am, then dry in better than the guys did..

Van is still farked in the shop, they brightest mech there broke the ignition key rack in the column trying to turn the key when the steering wheel was in between lock and free ( I think), so the whole column is ripped out..cruise cont, turn indicaters, air bag, ws wipers, horn....all that runs doun the center of the stalk..THEN thay can start it and find the eng problem...OY VEY!

I hope the $ river starts flowing for ya...I hadda good thing actually, if I was in the van, I couldn't have afforded the gas..so the Saturn saved my butt..and what I am doing only takes the bare min of copper tools, no carpentry or stuff like that.

Bee stings is weird, I just get a mosquito bite and ALL the past stings re-react..but, I can deal with it, now that I KNOW it, the itching and shid was driving me crazy for awhile..I apparently am still venomized and reactive, but to great ill effects.

I have waited on the "porch" roof over the door, due to the posts , 8'' dia. Cedar trees, being in the "back 40" waiting to be peeled. Then I can frame up that roof and work off of it to get the gable sided.
would really be nice to have a ground person cut and hand up stuff. As it stands, I'll stage it and load up up top and hang it with out climbing as much.
Freaking HOT on that side of the house lately, afternoon sun is cruel. I hope that the porch roof will help shed the water away farther and shade the kitchen door from the west.

Yeah, we've come quite a ways along in some aspects. Just getting that West wall stabil was a chore and a half. I may still need to add collar ties up in that room, the rafters are pushing the plate log out, it is only held in by its dovetailed ends, but the window breaks its continuity...not looking like it is still moving, but Just In Case.....
I've had to remove all the OSB sheathing and replace it. Little at a time.
Doode, it's coming along nicely. Hey, we just set some 8" cedar posts for a porch roof today. We cut them about a month ago, and pressure washed the bark immediately...smooth as a baby's butt...well, except for those danged little cedar titties, ooowwweee they're sharp :-( Someone's got it in for me, they're planting stories in the press
Whoever it is I wish they'd cut it out but when they will I can only guess.

I can't wait for global warming to show up here man. It wouldn't be too bad here if the sun came out once in a while, it's weeks at a time without seeing it. In winter here the sun helps alot with the tempature. When I grow up I want to be like Riverman!
My family moved from the hills of South Eastern KY in 1959.
One grandpa was a monshine maker among other things, the other was a moonshine runner among other things. The moonshine runner had to get out of the state for a bit and worked at Proctor and Gamble in Cincinnati for a while, but missed the hills, so he went back and mined coal. Coal dust cut his life short though.
The other lived a full life. I always wondered why all those people came there and asked for "streaked meat" from his smokehouse.
My family had to move away, law matters due to the shine.
The names were something else you could tell they came from the hills. Grandpa's name was Azbury, he couldn't read or write, also couldn't miss a flooring nail with his hammer. Kids name Ovallee, Chester,Lester,Arbeutus. When I grow up I want to be like Riverman!
I'm really not poor, but I've been having a run of bad luck financial wise. I may come down that way sometime, not in the cards for a while.
Glad to hear the dog's better.
Things here are getting worse all the time around here on the job scene. Ex brother in law was laid off a couple weeks ago. Commercial electrician. Not enough work.
O the other hand, the new yuppie mall 2 miles up the road is about to open. Should be a bunch of $7 / hour jobs there for the kids. Keep them off the streets hopefully. http://www.steiner.com/projects/thegreene/overview.cfm

Sphere,You prawbly remember that we both are in the same boat...remodelin' histerical homes. Anyhoo, here they have a property tax break to encourage rescue of old buildings. They freeze the value (at "this is a real hell-hole" level) for 10 years IIRC.They valued my property at just over land value...which was correct (I bought a lotta work for the money). Here that program is called the "This Old House" tax incentive. Once my improvents exceeded the 50k limit of the program, those additional improvements are assessed and taxed in the normal fashion.I've been at this for 6 years now, so my taxable value is gonna jump up by 50k in 4 years. I'm glad for the break, in the mean time. Lots of people here could save a bunch of coin, but they never even check it out. You can check with your local historical society to see if KY has anything similar. The program here has no limits on how you improve your house. I opted out of some programs (don't like people telling me how to rennovate my own home). This is the link to our program here (lotta good that'll do ya):http://www.mnpreservation.org/resources.Tax_breaks.phpKeep up the good work.

I really just like toi keep a low profile as far as the officiating and society folks go...taxes I can deal with, paperpushers and experts on what I can or can't do historically speaking, I have no time for.

Most of them burn up in meth lab fires in that part of the woods. 45 years is an old house.
GIVE ME AN............. F!
In my town (Winona) 75% of homes pre-date WWII and 50% go back to the 1800's. My house is an 1850's model.Meth could be to blame for my riding mower being stolen though.
The 45 year olds only get a 25K max reduction of tax value...homes over 70 get up to 50K. A modest but nice incentive to fix up older homes.
Around here the city targets them for teardown even with people desiring to rehab them.
Minnesota gets a hat tip for their approach.
