Why do kids now a days don’t listen when you try and help them. I feel like I am a dinasour in the industry now and have done lots of construction so when I offer my advice it is not because I am better than you it is that I have more experience than you. I have been doing this for over 20 years and when a 20 year old tells me that he know more than me I just shake my head. We are pouring a concrete wall that is in spots over 40′ high. We are using a form system called Peri which a single sided form system. Anyways we are using a 30′ whip with a 2 or 2 1/2″ head on it. The boss told me to go and check on them. Now my understanding that a head about that size will vibrate around a 24″ radius. We are allowed around 3′ lifts ( a engineer is there all through the pour to make sure we are doing it right) so they are stuffing the vibrator in the concrete and vibrating 8″ away from the bulk head and basically going to sleep. I warned them that they are going to blow the bulk head out. Of course all I get is attitude. Then they vibrate 2 or 3 feet into the previous lift. I shake my. I guess when they have to clean up concrete they may listen. Done my rant.

My unsolicited advice?
Don't give unsolicited advice. But...stand clear and enjoy the show.

No, he was ranting...that's different. It takes a big man to solicit.

"Why do kids now a days don't listen ..."
just guessing - maybe cause you talk in run-on sentences like you write?
It does challenge the imagination tho -"Then they vibrate 2 or 3 feet into the previous lift. I shake my. I guess when they have to clean up...."
What is it that you shake of yours?

silver..with all due respect..you sound like my father when spoke about kids...and all that ever did was just turn me off and alienate me.
It's "how" one speaks to people..kids..adults...animals...that have an affect.
Just telling someone something won't always do it...sometimes yes, sometimes no.
Anytime I tell someone that works for me how to do something I usually first let them know that there's many ways to do things. I try and befriend them any way I can before I talk to them. Just b/c I pay them doesn't mean they're gonna respect me.
You need to gain a persons respect which usually is pretty simple. Humor can go a long way in that department.
Also...why pick on kids? I know just as many adults that won't listen...old dogs learnin' new tricks'n all that.
It's all in the tone of your voice...and like I said..humor can go a real long way.
Kids now-a-days.....Gawd...I hate hearing that.

see... the real problem is...people that think they know it all... just screw it up for those of us that do...:)
pbut you are correct... it's how you say it... alot more than what you say...and when you are 20... you do think you know it all... but you will usually listen to an older person you A. like B. think is cool C. respect... if you are 20 you will never listen to someone who thinks they have authority...
just my take
to this day it still creeps me out when I hear ana dult say, "Kids today".What's so funny about that is...it's been said generation after generation....like ANY generation got it right...lol.My rule of thumb with anyone,,,animals included...you make em feel good from the get go and your odds of communicating better are ten fold! What's wrong with the world today is.........LOLView Image

I only refer to them as kids cause they are half my age. Yes I do treat them all with respect. Trust me I am very easy to work with and do have a sense of humour. I only offer advice. But when your doing a 2 million dollar wall and it looks like #### because they want to blow out the forms (which they have) someone should say something. The whole project is worth a 100 million and the company is trying hard to get the building at the sight. It is a 100,000 sq. ft. building. So if the rest of our work looks like sh** do you think they will give us the rest of the project. Whatever happened to respecting those that are in charge. No I don't do the "I am god and you must do what I say" routine. From the comments here I have to ask why do they have a forman, superitendant ect. on a job sight. There is not a day that goes by that I don't listen and take advice from those who are further up the food chain. Everday I always learn something new. I just feel that when your at 20 with a long career ahead of you you take all the advice you can get. Not think you know it all it will bite you in the #### later As I say you don't know how good you have it till you have to for someone else that will be a real a**. My apologies for being so long winded. So andy if someone screws something up on you and it costs you lots of money do you pat them on the back and tell them good job I will buy a beer after work.
Hey silver...I wasn't comin' down on you personally...I was just reacting to my own feelings with that phrase you used.
I know with all the different people that've worked for me...I try the best I can to teach people as well as learn from them...but I've had my share of folks I've had to let go and they weren't all kids...at all. It's not like I was disagreeing with the fact that some people just never seem to "want to" get it but more about generalizing.I'd rather hire a guy that knows little but is passionate about becoming a craftsperson than a thirty year carp that thinks they have all the answers. Now THATS really irritating!
Be well brotha

Hey let the man rant. He dont interrupt your cheech and chong threads!;]
Leaving the vibrator in one place too long will also cause the concrete to separate, all the agg falls to the bottom and the cream floats to the top. At least when they blow out the form you get to fix the very visible problem. If the concrete separates you might not see the problem.

Not meaning to be critical of you, but have spent many years in supervision (not construction) and people need to be told what to do!!! Particularly the young who have never been told what to do.
This is one of the problems with supervision, whether explicit based on the organization chart or implied by being trusted by a supervisor to check up on a task.
People need to practice giving directions not suggestions. Many young workers have never experienced being told what is to be done so think they can do their own thing with no consequence if things go wrong.
Give explicit instructions and insist they follow them under consequence of repremand and loss of employment.
No real advice but I sure feel a whole lot dumber than I did 10 years ago.
Every 20 something thinks they know everything.
Experience is a cruel expensive teacher some times, they'll either learn or find a difference career path I guess lol
That's funny ... a 30-something getting perturbed at the 20-somethings that know too much."Put your creed in your deed." Emerson

I worked as a union carpenter on bridges. There was so much rebar we had a hard time getting the concrete in. The State engineer had very strict limits as to how many seconds we could use the vibrator. I remember pleading with him to let me use it a bit longer. They sometimes granted a few extra seconds. Someone went back after and grouted any voids. To an untrained person it might have looked like a terrible concrete job but it was tested and supervised.... For years i have seen guys water down the concrete to save time, Sure it looked smooth but in reality a very weak mix. Try and explain this to anybody not trained they dont believe you!
I don't get preturbed, Just an observation is all lol
Those smart enough to listen usually don't need to be told.
Have seen just the opposite from my perspective. Just yesterdayand today a couple of young guys (early 30's at most) called and asked for my advise.
Maybe keep working a few more years, the young guys in engineering seem to be smart enough to ask about what has been learned over the last 20 years that has not been published for various reasons <G>
Even here on BT, look at the threads on asking advise on how to build well yet with low $$. There are some smart kids out there ... seek them out to mentor, forget the know it all jerks who never ask for advise.
When i wuz young, could not believe all the practical advise the 'old farts' could provide, including my own parents and grandparents.
The type you have run into obviously voted for bama? <G>
