I was reading untreatedwood’s thread on building a coffe table for his wife. A couple of days later my 22 year old son comes up with this idea for a Christmas present for his girlfriend. He wanted to build a coffee table that would display items under the glass.
So with untreatedwoods thread in the back of my mind I gave him some ideas.
He has worked with me since he was old enough to climb a ladder but neither of my boys have every shown much interest in woodworking as a hobby, until they got girlfriends and wives.
Any way I told untreatedwood I would post a picture when we are done.
We got some 50 YO cross arms (electrical tranmission line lumber) from a friend in South Dakota. 2 1/4 x 9″ weathered beams. All Douglas Fir. We decided to mill some of it into 1x4s and 2x2s for this project.
We could get 2 1×4 out of each board but the problem was the checks ran too deep. One sie of the 1×4 still had big black streaks in it. Any way after some trail and error we got some decent lumber.
We Levi and his GF were still just friendsthey went for walks along the beach near Yankton SD and the shale cliffs would shed alot of fossils and shark teeth. So he wanted to give her a means of displaying these finds. He envisions getting rock from the beach and setting these fossils in their natural setting under the glass.
So this is his 1st attempt at woodworking. I helped him but I tried to stay out of the way and let him make most of the design decisions and do the cutting and finishing. It’s hard to stand back and let someone else take the primary role in a project.
He chose to just lacquer the table with no stain. He intends for this to be a bedstand table. The table is 16” x 20″ and 22″ tall. The 2nd picture shows him holding the glass because we had just set the glass in silicone. Any squeeze out he cleaned up after it had dried the next day.

The fact that he tried at all is much more important than how well it turned out. (And please tell him I said that)
But it turned out quite well too. He oughta be proud of it, and I'm sure you're proud too.
Boss
Yea I'm proud of him. Thank you.
Now he wants to build something else. LOL
With my help of course. He is a very capable young man.

Rich,I think it's delightful. Good for him, and good for you.Now you just need a Far Side cartoon under the glass :)Best,

Carl went through a phase where he was really interested in Blacksmithing. He couldn't get enough of it for a while, but then his interest waned.
But I was glad he tried anyway. He learned a lot from it just by virtue of the fact that he tried something new.

I attached some pics of a toy that Carl and I made with stuff from that place. It's unique and kinda cool. I saw one a long time ago, and just copied it from memory. (It still needs a rope on the right end, so a kid can pull it)

I need to make that for my grandson, he'll be 3 in Jan. that is perfect. I wonder if I can get the wheels in time for xmas..or I'll make em my self. Looks like a few hours work at most. Thanks.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

That's cool. My daughter had a great natural talent as a kid for both art and craft - she would paint these awesome pictures as a kid that looked like an adult painted them, and she'd take my scraps from running trim, and with a hot-melt glue gun she'd design and make all kinds of cool kid stuff, and then paint it.
But once she hit the teenage years, she lost all interest. Now that she's a married adult, she still has no interest, despite her natural talent.
I think its awesome your son has the gift, maybe this is the beginning of a lifelong passion! I hope so, its so much better than a lot of stuff the young people get into these days.
And props to you for being hands-off, its the best way, but hard to do, as you said. Reminds me of a scene in "Surf's Up", where Kahuna surf mogul "Big Z" tries to show young surf grem Codie Maverick how to shape a board from Koa wood - its a great scene, in a really cool flick.

My kids got to be teenagers and their friends were way more important than learning a skill. They worked for Dad because they needed the money.

Good for him and for you! I had a client recently show me an end table that her daughter made in 8th grade shop class. She was wondering if I could "do anything with it". It was pine, a little crooked, a tad out of square, with joints that looked they were cut with a dull axe. I told the client that I thought it was perfect and that she shouldn't do a thing to it! I did add a few of screws so that it wouldn't collapse under the weight of a box of tissues. Fortunately, she realized the message that she'd be sending to her daughter by having me "fix" it. Young folks need more opportunities to live and learn. To much hoovering these days.

Thanks for the reply.

Nice table. I wonder how it would have turned out if you had left some of the weathered wood on the surface.

I'm sure he has a sense of accomplishment from this.

We never allowed the video machines in the house. So he did it on his computer. But he is pretty much out of that phase. Pretty heated discussions on that issue between him and Dad. I don't like that video game stuff at all. Too much wasted time and brain power.
I'm sure he has a sense of accomplishment from this.
That is so valuable to a young man.

FIRST PROJECT?? you sure? that's kinda humbling, I think.....great job at that, in any case, let alone first try. Wow. Kudos.

Yeah, and while you're at it add his latest quote:

Yeah, I think I'll stick with the true statement. thanks, anyway!

You implied that I had lied, or that it was untrue that Bush this week said he'd "abandoned free market principles to save the free market system."
But it is true. He did say it. And I think it's a damn shame for him and his legacy, and anyone who calls themselves a capitalist has to be pretty upset by what the government is doing these days.
Please take it to the Tavern.
JAlden, You're right. I didn't mean to get political, just tried to point out some irony and got a little defensive. Sorry for going off topic.
Cargin, your son's table looks great. Just curious about the silicone. Is it strong enough to keep the glass in place with the lid lifted?
Thanks, no one loves a political discussion more than me. Honest, I could discuss that stuff all night. Just trying to keep things where they belong. A self policing forum keeps the moderators at bay, ya know.
For the limited time the top is open, I think the silicone would be fine. You wouldn't open past 90 degrees too often anyways.
Eldan
Glass was a very, very tight fit.
We had just put the silicone in the night i took pics.
I will hold without any problem.
I took him to keep his hand there just in case.
After it sets, no problem.
We had to use firm pressure to get the glass in. I think it would have stayed in place without silicone. But why tempt problems?

He has worked with me doing remodeling for 4 years. Some times it's roofing, sometimes it's drywall and he has been the helper on alot of cabinet jobs.
But this is the 1st time that he took a stab at a piece of furniture, by himself.
I was available, and I helped him do the glue up. I didn't realize how difficult it is to glue up a project until I watched someone who has never done it before.
Rich
you are right on! I had a tough time because I glued up the legs and aprons all at once. I did not make the tenons long enough to do the two ends separately as I should have. Then, keeping it square with the setbacks on the legs was another issue. Anyway, gluing AND keeping it square was a challenge. I used Norm Abrams homemade connections for the top and aprons to allow movement. So I had to keep the legs square to the top. All in all, it was a lot of fun. I'm just finishing a stereo cabinet right now for my "audiophile" son. Mom is sick of all the wires and amps and we are going to "hide" them. I glued it all together this AM before the snow hit. Now I have to make the base and shelves. Once I get those in place, and finished, we can start to use it. I'll make the doors afterwards...

My son has been bitten by the audio bug in the last year and a half. I have posted pics of the sub-woofers we've built (4' tall, 400 lbs+) and he has amps for each one...My wife is sick of the cords all over the place, and he needs to stack them in one place. So I designed a cabinet to match the wainscotting I put up 2 years ago. It will actually look like someone thought about it!!..Ha. It's been a challenge with temps in the teens. I have a heated shop, but I hate spending the $ to warm up a room just to put finish on.
Anyway, we are trying to figure out how to keep it cool. I"ve put 2 sets of holes in each side, and I really don't want to put any more. I've talked to some fan manufacturers, and there is a noise issue there. so we havent decided how to solve that issue. Anyway, enjoy that table!! Merry Christmas and happy holidays.
