i’m trying to locate a plywood product that i remember seeing some where but don’t know the manufacturer. the face consists of strips of clear or mostly clear pine, random widths and lengths, butted together to form the top layer of veneer. the effect is more like a gym floor or bowling lane surface than a butcherblock. the thickness is probably 3/4″ and i don’t remember if the edges are t&g or not. i would really appreciate any info on this or a similiar product.

Are you looking for plywood flooring or A1 grade veneered plywood ?

A1veneer for cabinet work.
I think I know the one you mean, solid-core 3/4" with veneer faces (G2S) in 4" wide bookmatched strips.
I have no idea where you live; but, I just did an internet search and turned up dozens of hits like this one: http://www.highlandhardwoods.com/hardwood-plywood.html
and I also did an online 411 (aka: Yellow Pages) search for my area using "plywood" as the criteria which returned 2 categories, "retail" and "wholesale"; picking retail returned 3 pages of businesses which sell A1 cabinent plywood. Apparently the trick is not to specify "cabinent grade", as that's a lower quality than the A1, but do specify bookmatched veneer. Here's an example Yellow Pages hit that had a website http://www.exotic-woods.com/index.html

As a quick follow-up, these folks have a free booklet about where to buy plywood

Canadians have their own page http://www.chpva.ca/.

They also have a good booklet on grades and how plywood is specified; my students get a copy as required reading.cabinetmaker/college instructor. Cape Breton, N.S
thanks phil, you've been a great help!
