Bob,
It seems to me you are in the central N.J. area. Maybe you could answer this question. I’m putting together a few bids for Interior trim. First time in a while.
Any idea what the average going rate is for residential trim in the area? I’m looking at up and down RT 206 From Morristown to Princton. I’m looking for a comparison based on Per Door And Window as well as Lineal foot of Baseboard and crown. 31/2″ casing, 5″ baseboards and stool, apron and casing on the windows. Most likely 4″ Crown.
I’m affraid My numbers are too low but I’ve heard of some strange pricing schemes as of late. One yard recommended me to a builder who wanted a per opening charge. that included base and shoe. Crown and closets extra. his last trimmer gave him a fixed per opening charge. It included all of the Baseboard and shoe for that room. For example a bedroom with a closet was two openings. So, two times cost = the price for that room. Not comfortable with it and told him so. He implied I was crazy.
Thanks for any help anyone can offer.

Well, that's about the stupidest scheme I ever heard of....lol. How can you give a price per opening that includes base? One room with one door can be 10x10, and another can be 12x18. I guess if he's supplying the material, you're making four cuts per room (for most rooms), so "maybe" it can work, but if I were you, I'd base my numbers on the manhours you need to do a large room. Then how do you price a dining room with just archways????
I wish I could help, but I don't price that way, and I don't know what your labor rates are. If you don't need the work too badly, I'd look for a builder that will accept a more sensible pricing method.

My thoughts exactly but bunches of silly schemes are popping up lately. I figure It takes me an Hour to hang and case a door. Based on that I figure between $35 and $40 per door. I can run 80 feet of base an hour so I go around .80-1.05 per foot.Windows around $35 per. I can hit two or three per hour.
Sound reasonable to you? Or anyone else who wants to chime in for that matter.
the builder is the crazy one.
never let someone dictate how you price your work. (That includes you guys who want to work for HD)
We do abnout a dollar a foot but openings more than you, 'course our windows always have sills and xtension jambs, and the doors are generally special.

Where are you located Piffin?
I'd like to, and just might go $45 a door and $40 a window. But i'm trying to get a feel for it. Been sometime since I've bid a whole house. Usually do smaller specialty stuff.
Well, it sounds like you have a good handle on your productivity rates, but your hourly charge sounds insanely low. If you're carrying insurance, paying taxes, have a truck and tools, at $35-40 per hour, you're better off working at Home Depot, since what's left over is about the same as what you'd make stocking shelves there. Not to mention that you need to make a profit.
To make matters worse, you're working in PRINCETON, for God's sake! That's Ivy League, man!! Personally, I wouldn't work in high end houses like that unless after all overhead expenses, I was netting $40-45/hour plus a minimum 10% profit. That probably converts to about a $65/hour billing rate assuming your overhead is fairly lean.
But that's just me.

My mistake. went back to my original post about an hour to hang and case two doors. and about the same for windows so around $70 per hour
